When I am playing a music playlist, the currently playing song is highlighted in grey. I would like to change this highlight color to a different color. Can that be done? If so, how is it done?

Unfortunately, this feature does not exist natively.
As it's a very specific feature request, maybe you'll get more luck with a VLC addon that helps you customize your User Interface.
