VLC unable to send sound to Audio Interface (Scarlet Focusrite)

Postby romantheg » 27 Feb 2025 22:16

Dear forum peeps,

Unfortunately, I have an issue with VLC. It seems that VLC is unable to detect / adress my audio interface. When selecting another audio device like my monitor speakers, sound is fine. Other applications such as Reaper, Windows Media Player etc have no issue adressing the audio interface. The Log from VLC is attatched.

What I did already for problemsolving:

Reinstall VLC 3.21
Restart PC
Set different Output modules and set the device in the Audio Settings (also mix-and-match)
For the Focusrite, I installed the latest drivers from the manufacturer (which has been a fix for other people)
Also read that some nightly builds may fix some issues, but I have not yet tried that
PC runs Windows 11

Thanks for the attention

Code: Select all

wasapi error: unsupported audio format directsound error: cannot open directx audio device main error: module not functional main error: failed to create audio output

Does your device support S/PDIF ? If so, have you tried it ?

Menu Tools -> Preferences -> Audio
Tick Use S/PDIF when available and select the correct device.
Once done, don't forget to click on the Save button then exit and restart VLC for the change to take effect.

Hey!

Sorry, I checked but literally dont have this menu option. I only have in the Output section HDMI/SPDIF audio passthrough dropdown, which has enabled/disabled/ac3-dts only. Tried all 3, makes no difference, I get the same error message. If you refer to the Force spdif support in the advanced preferences "all settings", also tried that

Are you absolutely sure that your device does support S/PDIF ? Check its specs.

Could not find anything in the specsheet about S/PDIF. I am confused how this can be an issue, if none of the modes work. I connect via USB 2.0.

I don't know about this device but if it doesn't support WASAPI, DirectSound and S/PDIF then there is nothing VLC can do.
Check in the specs which inputs are supported.

I could resolve the issue. After unplugging and replugging the interface the focusrite device settings opened, in which I could set the sample rate and buffer size. Setting it to 44.1k (was 48k previously) fixed the issues in VLC for me. Hope this helps someone else as well.

That sounds like a bug in the Scarlet device drivers.
