Editing Media Information

Postby Cryog » 13 Jul 2022 07:01

I am having a problem when trying to edit a video's Media Information.

The steps I take:
1. Start a video
2. Pause the video
3. Go to: Tools>Media Information
4. Under the General tab, I edit any information I need/want to
5. Click Save Metadata
6. Click Close & exit the video

But when I reopen the video & check, none of my edits are saved.

As an alternative; I can Right-click the video file, choose Properties, select the Details tab, edit some information & click Apply.
The problem with this route is that not everything I edit in the Comments section gets saved when I check while the video is playing.

Anyone have the same problem or know if there is a fix to this?

Works for me. If you don't have the current version of vlc which is 3.0.17.4 download it from here: https://www.videolan.org/

If you're already running 3.0.17.4 reset preferences and then try again: https://wiki.videolan.org/VSG:ResetPrefs

I am using VLC 3.0.21 on windows 10 and am having the same problem. None of my media information is saved. I am trying to edit the title of an .iso dvd image file. I select Tools>Media Information>General tab and change the name. The changed name does not persist after I close and then reopen the video with VLC.

VLC can edit the metadata of media files like MP3, MP4, OGG, etc.
An ISO file is not a media file but a disc image. A DVD is not a media file either but a disc which contains video, audio and subtitles streams.

I am using VLC v3.0.20

The steps I take:
1. Start a video
2. Pause the video
3. Go to: Tools>Media Information
4. Under the General tab, I edit any information I need/want to
5. Click Save Metadata
6. Click Close & exit the video

I've tried editing Media Information of .AVI, .MP4, MKV, .MOV & even a .M4V file at 1 time.
Not always, but I do have most success w/the .AVI, .MP4 & .MOV files. .MKV files never save my edits & the 1 time I tried, .M4V didn't save my edit either.
Even Right-clicking a file, choosing Properties, selecting the Details tab, editing some information & clicking Apply doesn't always help.
And I don't get any error messages, I just know some edits didn't stick when I play the videos.

As I said before, an ISO file is NOT a media file.

When I right-click a .MP4 file & select properties, I open the Details tab>type in the Title & Year>& click Apply.
But then I get this error:
"An unexpected error is keeping you from applying properties to the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.
Error 0x80004005: Unspecified error"
(why can't I post a picture from my computer here?)

When I play the video (using VLC v3.0.20), I open Tools>Media Information>type in the Title & Date>& click Save Metadata.
No error shows up. But once I close the video & start it again, the Metadata isn't saved. And now the time elapsed bar is moving, but there is no video & sound.

I've tried different 'solutions' that I've found when searching for "Error 0x80004005: Unspecified error", but nothing has helped me.

Is your file on a shared folder or drive ?

We need the full log, from the very beginning to the very end. Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, keep the messages window open during the whole process and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com or on Justpaste.it if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of your original problematic file to WeTransfer.com or Disroot.org and then post the link to the file here.

My file is not in any shared folder or drive.

I cannot upload a log of my problem because I found a workaround before I came back to this thread.
Here is what I did: I used an online website.
Fortunately, it did work out for me.

And thanks for informing me on a way I can upload pictures to the VideoLan forums.
