No video or audio playback

Postby headofbus » 08 May 2024 19:01

Hello, a few days ago my VLC stopped playing all video and audio: MP4, MKV, MP3, FLAC, CDs, DVDs, you name it. I'm not sure what change I could have made that caused this.
Everything plays fine on other media players such as Winamp and Media Player Classic.
When I open a file it shows the first frame and correct file length but will not go past the first frame. Playback controls do not work. In Media Information, codecs and metadata are correct.
My VLC and graphics card drivers are on the latest version. I have tried clearing VLC's preferences and cache, as well as uninstalling and reinstalling it. I also tried rolling back my graphics card driver to the previous version.
In preferences, audio and video are enabled. I noticed even after closing VLC it remains running in the background (saw this in the task manager.) Not sure if that is related.
Could you suggest how to resolve this? Thanks in advance.

First, reboot your computer.
Uninstall VLC.
Then delete the whole C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\ folder if it's still exists, it might be C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\ if you're using the 32-bit version.
Also delete the whole %APPDATA%\vlc\ folder.

Once done, reboot again and reinstall latest version of VLC, v3.0.20 as of today.

That did it, thanks! I think deleting the appdata folder was the key.
