View single image file without "playing" it?

Postby wysocki » 21 Jan 2024 21:13

I selected VLC to be the default program to open image files (jpg, png, etc) when I click on them in explorer. Unfortunately after they appear, they disappear because VLC decided to "play" the image for 10 seconds then show me the logo screen. I even went into the settings and deselected "Playlist | Autostart" but then I get just the logo screen and have to click on PLAY (which again lasts only 10 seconds AND I couldn't even find that 10 second setting in preferences).

Can't VLC understand that a single image should just be displayed and not "played"!!!!? Is there any way to accomplish this?

  1. Tools, Preferences Ctrl+P
  2. Show settings: Change from Simple to All
  3. Input / Codecs → Demuxers → Image
  4. Duration in seconds: 10.00
  5. Save
To display permanently All instead of Simple settings or vice versa:
  1. Tools, Preferences Ctrl+P
  2. Show settings: Change from Simple to All
  3. Interface
  4. [X] Show advanced options
  5. Save

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind if I want to change the slideshow speeds for playlists.
But I still want to know if I can use VLC to just display a single image (like in a pause mode).

For displaying a single image I suggest to enable Playlist → Autostart and use the pause button or space key.

Thanks, but now it just shows the image for 1 second then gone. I'll just use some other app.

Because you missed the minus - sign before the 1:
Duration in seconds: -1.00

Ack! My bad. Thanks for the tip, restored my faith in VLC!
