Problem with subtitles

Postby MrJoecat » 10 Jan 2024 02:44

I've searched for answers to this already and did not find it addressed so here goes. About 10% of my video files are having a problem with the way subtitles are displayed. They are displayed correctly on my Windows 10 desktop, but when I go to watch the same files on my Windows 10 laptop the subtitles are shrunken down miniscule almost unreadable and changing the font size under preferences does not make any difference at all. Why would VLC display them correctly on my desktop but not on my laptop, when they use the same operating system? What changes it? Does anyone have any ideas?

Reset the preferences (the manual way) and try again:

Unfortunately this didn't do anything. Still trying to figure out why it does this

I haven't touched the settings. The videos I play are either 720 or 1080 dpi. The vlc programs on both the desktop and laptop are the same and should work the same. Yet changing the subtitle preferences work just fine on the desktop but won't work at all on the laptop despite it being the same program. I normally don't have to change anything from one to the other.

What makes it even more odd it only happens to about 10 or 20% of the videos the vast majority work just fine on vlc on both desktop and laptop so I suspect its something unique to those videos only but I can't figure out what the common denominator is and why vlc is playing them differently. I don't change any settings from one video to the next it just happens on its own.

Notice that if the subtitles are DVD or Blu-ray subtitles then they are bitmap images, so they can't be resized and the font can't be changed.

These aren't dvd or blu ray. These are video files download from places like you tube and others with subtitles hard encoded with the files. As I indicated I can change the font and size just fine on my desktop but the same settings wont work on my laptop. And its not every video file just a few of them. So I can't tell if its a vlc issue or an issue with the videos themselves.
