Unable to Play Videos Made on a Pixel 7 Pro Cellphone

Postby skrontle » 26 Aug 2023 23:18

I am sorry that this post is so long, but I decided to write every detail of it...

Today I made my first two videos (Video 1 and Video 2)using my Pixel 7 Pro. Then I connected the P7P to my desktop computer and copied both videos to the computer desktop. Video 1 is a 2:04 long MP4, and Video 2 is an 8 minutes long MP4. I can play them back on the Pixel without problems but I cannot play them on my desktop computer. Here are the symptoms:

1ST ATTEMPT
At the computer's desktop and without opening VLC Media Player, I navigated to the videos on the Pixel and double-clicked Video 1, expecting VLC to play it directly from the camera. (BTW, I've used VLC for over 10 years without any problems.) The computer's HDD went through some gyrations for 3-4 seconds, and VLC never started.

2ND ATTEMPT
I navigated to Video 1 that's on the desktop, and double-clicked. VLC never started.

3RD ATTEMPT
This time I started VLC first and then opened the video that was in the P7P. The video played but at 54 seconds in, the video stopped playing. The screen was frozen on the last displayed frame and the VLC scrubber stopped moving for a few seconds and then resumed after five seconds. The video frame did not change. Then the screen went black.

4TH ATTEMPT
I quit and restarted VLC and through its File menu I selected and played the video that I had copied to the computer. The video played until around 1:30 when again, the video stopped playing, The screen was frozen on the last displayed frame while the VLC scrubber continued to move.

5TH ATTEMPT
I quit VLC and restarted it and tried to play the video a third time, but then the video froze about 20 seconds in while the scrubber continued to move.

6TH ATTEMPT
I repeated the above steps, this time using Video 2, and I got the same results.

7TH ATTEMPT
I shut the computer down and pressed its Power button to restart it. Then I repeated the previous actions but got all of the same results.

NOTES:
The Pixel reports "10-bit HDR" when it plays the videos.
I have tried this using the K-Lite Codec Pack version 17.75

What might the problem be?
* HP Pavilion Desktop 510-p114
* Windows 10 Home 22H2 19045.3996
* Firefox 122; Thunderbird 115.6.1

Read this guide:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=156428

If it doesn't help then open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com or on Justpaste.it if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of your original problematic file to WeTransfer.com or Disroot.org and then post the link to the file here.

UPDATE:

I tried to play the files on a different Windows 10 computer with the same results.

I tried an earlier version of VideoLan (version 3.0.12). Same results. The files will not play much beyond the first few frames.

I tried making new videos with 10-Bit HDR turned off (i.e. running 4K). Same results

Any ideas?

Please read my post again, carefully.
We do need a messages log and a sample file.

I just made a 30-second video in FHD mode. And VLC can play it. I'll make a longer video later and test it. I will not be a happy camper if my PC cannot handle videos that are above 1080 pixels, but it's starting to look that way.

According to your signature you are using an HP Pavilion Desktop 510-p114.

From the HP support page:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05278338

Code: Select all

Processor Integrated Graphics Intel Core i7-6700T (Skylake) 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel HD Graphics (GT2)

So yes, at best you have an Intel 4600 using shared memory which is kinda weak and slow:
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/i ... l-gt2.g591

I'm not even sure it does support hardware acceleration for 10-bit videos.
Workaround: buy another recent graphics card and don't use the on-board one.

You're right, my HP 510 was built in 2017 and does not support 4K or 10-bit HDR video. :(
