Cannot stream/download Vimeo videos

Postby VLM » 19 Jun 2023 18:50

I tried to download several videos posted by a law firm using the Stream command. (There is no Vimeo download button on these videos) I went through the whole process, chose mp4, identified a destination location and file name, etc. But after I click "Stream", nothing happens, no matter how long I wait.

Separately, I downloaded several of these short videos using Video DownloadHelper in Firefox. I did get mp4 files, but they don't play properly. For example, in SMPlayer, the video is speeded up, there is no audio, and the play counter remains at zero even as the video speeds along. In VLC, the opening image remains (no video plays), but the audio is perfect.

How can I download these brief (less than 5 minutes) programs so that they play back like ordinary mp4 files? Thank you.

Hi, I don't think VLC 3 supports Vimeo, we need to write a lua extension for that. VLC 4 nightlies (not released yet) has support for yt-dlp which will probably support vimeo, but it's not really available on windows either for now unfortunately.

Well, in VLC 3.0.18 a Vimeo.luac plugin does already exist in the \lua\playlist folder, and it does work fine with some Vimeo links I've tried.
The reason why I'm asking for some problematic URLs.

I am indeed running 3.0.18, just installed it yesterday. I have never installed a VLC plugin, but I am happy to try it, of course. Again, thank you.

Looks like these links require to be logged in for being played:

Code: Select all

Log in to watch This collection contains unrated or mature content. Please log in to watch.

They also redirect to some other pages. For instance, https://vimeo.com/showcase/10256784 redirects to https://vimeo.com/786806795 but this one also requires to be logged in:

Code: Select all

Video is not rated. Log in to watch.

Thank you for looking at some of these links. Yes, I have attempted these downloads while logged in. I have Firefox protected inside a VPN, and I wondered whether that might be the problem. So I tried downloading in Vivaldi using a different download extension, and the extension found one video but nothing downloadable. So my tentative conclusion is that the publisher (law firm) has downloading blocked on this set of videos. I have written to them and am awaiting a response. I will follow up.
