Audio disappears in all VLC versions after 2.2.8

Postby Stringence » 19 Dec 2022 00:31

Hello everyone,

I have an audio playback issue: older video recordings (VOB-format) work fine in all VLC versions up to 2.2.8.
In all versions after, sound disapperas in parts of the videos. Sound always disapperas at specific seconds, the exact same time locations in the videos.

One example, at 1:13:43 VLC suddenly jumps back to 1:11:40, the film continues playing, but the sound is gone. I It's like sound goes out of synch, and disappears. I can manually go back after the un-synch point, and film/audio are in synch again.

Can't explain this, tried to describe it as well as I can. Only a person with deep technical knowlege of VLC might help, I guess?

2.2.8 won't install on Windows 11 64-bit.

What can be done? I'd like to continue to enjoy my old recordings, I have quite a collection.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com or on Justpaste.it if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of your original problematic file to Zippyshare.com or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.
https://www.zippyshare.com
https://wetransfer.com

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 35#p193335
200 MB max should be enough.

After collecting these messages, VLC can't close.

Splitters: the clips are synchronized, but you can hear a stop at the "broken" points, before the sound comes back.

https://www22.zippyshare.com/v/r4gj1X4N/file.html

I quote part of the VLC-messages here, sound stops at "main error: Timestamp ..."

Enough steps of the log?

Re: Audio disappears in all VLC versions after 2.2.8

Another example:

log
https://www39.zippyshare.com/v/8UWwrzMn/file.html

video clip
https://www39.zippyshare.com/v/lKyG32xq/file.html

So far it happens in programs I've printed onto DVD in VOB-format myself.
If it's a factory printed DVD, this sound problem doesn't seem to appear.
Also it doesn't seem to appear when I play mp4-format videos.

Does this help in the search for the problem?

Again, in VLC version 2.2.8 sound was never lost. But all versions after it.

I can't reproduce the issue, I have no problems at all for playing any of your sample files with VLC 3.0.18.

It looks like the problem comes from your computer:

Code: Select all

main error: module not functional main debug: keeping audio output main error: failed to create audio output ... main warning: clock gap, unexpected stream discontinuity main warning: feeding synchro with a new reference point trying to recover from clock gap main error: Timestamp conversion failed (delay 1000000, buffering 7500, bound 3000000) main error: Could not convert timestamp 71403337944 for FFmpeg main debug: discarded audio buffer

Try another audio output module:
http://wiki.videolan.org/WindowsFAQ-2.0 ... _anomalies

And/or:
Disable time stretching in the audio preferences in Menu Tools -> Preferences -> Audio
Use a faster resampler or no resampler at all in Menu Tools -> Preferences (Show Settings = ALL) -> Audio -> Audio Resampler

After the changes save the preferences then exit and restart VLC.

If it doesn't help then check your computer latency:

I've had the same problem on two separate computers.

Had both 3.0.18 32-bit and 2.2.8 64-bit installed at the same time. Didn't know different versions could be installed?

Uninstalled them both, and deleted all remaining files and settings.

Tried to install 2.2.8 again, and it was successful. Playback-problems are gone, 2.2.8 performs without issues.

I can't explain it.

See that I first had this problem in 2018, when VLC-versions beyond 2.2.8 came and my system updated.

But it would be good to know technically why this happens? Now I have to avoid updates.
