Hi folks,
When I play a CD, the volume of the track for the first few bars is uncomfortably high, then it settles down. I am using W11 and have never had this problem before.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

AFAIK there is no option of this kind in VLC. Something else is taking over, check this setting:
