Get picture distortion when resuming a video after a pause.

Postby Legendarion » 10 Jun 2022 20:24

I have tried to say this on another thread with no luck. So I try again.

I get picture distortion when pausing and then resuming on whatever video. VLC has been doing this ever since version 3.0.9 or 3.10 or something. It's very annoying.

Has anyone else ever noticed this?

Do you have the latest version of vlc installed? Version 3.0.17.4 can be downloaded from here: https://www.videolan.org/

Try resetting preferences: https://wiki.videolan.org/VSG:ResetPrefs

If that doesn't help try changing the output module to "OpenGL video output for Windows" which is located in Preferences --> Video. Save, exit and restart vlc.

I can't reproduce the problem in any event.

I have the latest version installed. Resetting or not doesn't help as it happens anyway after a fresh install of the operating system. And I have tried various methods in the preferences.

I used to have AMD Radeon HD 7770 graphic card and now I have Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 with exactly the same situation.

I would like to give a picture of it here, but I don't know how to upload without using an external site.

You can't upload images to the forum, We recommend using this third party site instead: https://postimages.org/ It's fast and no ads.

Well, this is how it becomes:

https://i.postimg.cc/8c2T4jb9/VLC-2.jpg

https://i.postimg.cc/5t0xZbW2/VLC-3.jpg

The amount of size of that sort of distortion/noises/disturbance or whatever it is actually called that happens on the picture is different all the time. The image settles back to normal after a certain number of seconds.

Can also say that it doesn't always happen right away when pausing and then resuming. But if I pause and resume X amount of times it'll do the way it looks on the pictures.

Open preferences again and click the Input/Codecs button. Where it says "Hardware-accelerated decoding" change it to "DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) 2.0". Save, exit and restart vlc.

OK, in the same Input / Codecs menu --> Hardware-accelerated decoding change it to Disable. Save and restart again as before.

If it fails to fix the problem please create a log as follows:
  1. Open vlc, but don't start a video yet. Instead hit Ctrl + M to open Messages.
  2. At the bottom, change Verbosity to "2" (ignore the field to create a name) and leave the Messages window open.
  3. Start a video which pixelates and let run until it finishes.
  4. Hit Ctrl + M again (or click Messages on the Windows toolbar) and either type a name for the log and click Save As, or right click anywhere in the log --> Select All ---> right click Copy.
  5. Go to Pastebin.com and paste the log into the New Paste field (no need to create an account) and give it a name and then click the Create New Paste button, This will change the URL at the top. Copy that and then paste it into your next post.

I tested by disabling the hardware-accelerated decoding and it seems that corrects the issue. But once I use the others (Automatic/Direct3D 11 Video Acceleration/DXVA) it'll happen again.

What's your hardware?

Well, even with one or two pauses makes it happen.

If I for example pause just 1 time, then wait in some seconds and then resume, it might happen.

Here's another log with less pausing: https://pastebin.com/DMT9aRnx

It won't make a lot of difference to run vlc with hardware-accelerated decoding disabled. Software decoding is more than adequate in most cases.

A review of your GeForce GTX 1650 shows it to be a budget GPU which might affect its performance in vlc.
