Cannot play large files in VLC player

Postby jstuardo » 02 Mar 2022 23:58

Hello,

I have installed last version of VLC player. I tried to watch an 15 GB MP4 file (about 6 hours). VLC player loads it (no error when loaded) but it is not played.

What is happening here? or is VLC player limited in file size?

Just in case, I tell you that this file is correctly opened in Windows Media Player and in OpenShot video editor.

Thanks
jaime

I can't reproduce the issue.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

And upload a short sample of your original problematic file to Zippyshare.com or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.

https://wetransfer.com

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 35#p193335
200 MB max should be enough.

Hello... this also happens with a 164 MB file.

You can find log file here: https://pastebin.com/X3wHYnfM. As it can be seen, main error is "hevc warning: Forbidden zero bit not null, corrupted NAL". As I told, I can watch the videos without any problem using other viewers.

Link of a sample MP4 file is this: https://www116.zippyshare.com/v/wqJ3imf4/file.html

Thanks
Jaime

what is your version of VLC ?
the provided sample link of the 169MB MP4 encoded file plays without issues on mine, 64bit version 3.0.16 Vetinari on windows 11 64bit.
there is no audio with this video.

It is the same. The only difference is that I have Windows 10, but this is not the problem.

That codec information window appears empty. Should I add something extra that does not come with VLC installer? if this is the case, Windows Media Player will not play that file either.

Yes, no audio. Only video.

before you try to open the file again, open VLC, click "tools", click "messages" and on the bottom left corner of the "messages" window, look for "verbosity" and change it to "(1) warning", leave the "messages" window open and then open your file again and wait about 10 seconds, then go to the "messages" window, click "save as..." and save the file as "log" and then open the "log", copy all of the text and then paste it here (i dont see any ability to attach a file in this forum).
this sounds to me like a file/folder access permissions issue if WM player wont play the file either.
either VLC/WM is not being allowed to access the folder/file or the file is already being accessed by another program (locking it for exclusive access to that program).
if this file is constantly and actively being written to from another device (if its being saved constantly in the folder from another device on the network), then it will "lock" when its being written and cannot be opened by any program until the device that is saving the file, has "unlocked" access to the file.
i assume this since the video appears to be surveillance and is likely being constantly written/saved to the folder at the time you try to play it.

I can play your file without any problem and without any error messages like yours.
Reset the preferences and try again:
