Turn off subtitles
Right. I made beaucoup M4V files from MKV or directly. VLC won't turn off the subtitles but windows media player will. Why is that? I used handbrake for the encoding.

You have to manually deactivate subtitles in the Preferences on VLC, if that's the case. "Enable subtitles" is On as default.
Tools - Preferences - Subtitles/OSD - Enable subtitles.

Do you mean that you cannot disable the subtitles at all with VLC?

Figured it out. When the video was created, Handbrake was set to imbed the subtitles so I turned that off. Solved.
