HDR Playback - Either Stable with Poor Picture, or Great Picture, but Freezes

Postby Chris Kelly » 12 Nov 2021 23:06

I'm using an HP SPECTRE x360 15T-DF0075NR convertible laptop/notebook with a 15.6" AMOLED panel, Intel I7-8565U processor, Intel Graphics UHD 620, and NVIDIA MX150. I am running Windows 11 with HDR and Auto HDR enabled. I believe I'm on VLC version 3.0.16. When I try setting the Video Output Module to OpenGL and OpenGL for Windows, I get a perfect picture with great contrast and color, but sometimes the image freezes while the video is playing. When I set the Video Output Module to Auto, the playback is more stable and doesn't freeze and the picture is bright, but whites clip when above a certain point and brighter colors are undersaturated. In both situations, I have the FFMPEG Hardware Decoding set to Auto. Based on tests I ran when choosing other hardware decoders and video output modules, it would appear the Auto setting is using the Direct3D11 hardware options. When choosing OpenGL and OpenGL for Windows as a video output module, I notice my GPU and CPU resources increase significantly. I'd imagine that's due to the OpenGL's remapping.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

And upload a short sample of your original problematic file to Zippyshare.com or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.

https://wetransfer.com

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 35#p193335
200 MB max should be enough.

Then you should create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with your above report, the links to your log and sample file and the link to this thread:

Actually, I think it's the darker colors that are undersaturated. Here is a link to the Sony 4K UHD Blu-ray calibration M2TS file. Here are the results after playing the file three times--first with the video output module set to Direct3D11, then set to OpenGL for Windows, and finally set to OpenGL. I don't own a smartphone in order to register at that Videolan link you told me to report this too.

According to this AVS Forum thread, the test patterns found on Sony's 4K UHD Blu-ray discs include three sets of color windows--2020, P3, and 709. When setting VLC to use Direct3D11 as a video output module and an FFMPEG hardware decoder (which is what happens when everything is set to Auto), I'm pretty sure the 2020 and P3 patterns would look good when Windows HDR is turned on, while the 709 patterns would be undersaturated being that the 709 patterns are SDR. And considering the 500-Nit limit of my laptop's display, any whites above 500 Nits would get clipped. Without the tone mapping used by the OpenGL video output module, I am starting to think everything is behaving as it's supposed to. My other two options would be to either (1) go into the Windows HD color settings and play with HDR brightness, or (2) set VLC to use the OpenGL video output module. Being that the UHD 620 integrated graphics found on Intel's U series processors isn't as powerful as the UHD 630 integrated graphics found on Intel's laptop H, HK, and Hq, as well as standard and K desktop processors, I'm thinking the reason I get freezing when using the OpenGL video output module is that the UHD 620 integrated graphics might not be able to handle the demands of the OpenGL video output module. I don't know how much of what I just said or even if any of it is correct. I'm just sharing my experiences and possible reasons behind them for anyone who is having similar playback issues.

You should really create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with your reports, tests, the links to your log and sample file and the link to this thread:

I'm sight impaired and don't use a smartphone. I don't think that VLC Track site is letting me register on a regular PC.
