"add to VLC's playlist" there for avi, but not for mp4

Postby d4005b » 19 Oct 2021 18:34

I've seen a lot of threads about this across many sites, but no really direct solution. It's usually just uninstall, clean, and re-install. As I have some UI customizations (to add buttons) I'd prefer not to do that if possible.

When I have a video playing and I right-click on an avi file, I'm offered "add to VLC's playlist" in the right-click menu. When I try the same thing with an MP4, it's not offered. It was offered a few weeks ago, but somehow it disappeared. I don't know which program did it.

Is there a .reg file we can download/edit/run that will restore all the appropriate settings? Or is there a config/resource file that belongs to VLC that I can edit?

Hit Ctrl + L to open the Playlist menu while the video is playing - it will continue to play in the bottom left hand corner - and then right click the file and click "Add to playlist". Hit Ctrl + L again to toggle to the previous view.

Thanks, but I see now that I wasn't specific enough. I meant that the right-click menu on a file in Windows Explorer isn't offering me "add to VLC's playlist" for mp4 files but it is for avi files, as per the screenshots.

It works for me with avi files.

Yeah, me too. Not for mp4 though.

Thanks, but that's for "Play with VLC" which I already have, in my screenshots. It's the "add to VLC's playlist" that I'm missing.

Ouch... mental aberration on my part there. Sorry about that. There's an app called OpenWithPlusPlus which has "add to mpv playlist" at the top in the screenshot so maybe there's an entry for vlc further down. https://github.com/stax76/OpenWithPlusPlus

I've managed to fix the associations. Even though in Windows settings it showed VLC as being the registered program for mp4 files, and in the registry shell section it showed all the correct keys for mp4 (identical to avi) it still hadn't worked.

What I did: I right-clicked an mp4 (which had a VLC icon btw, so it was already associated to mp4 files but didn't show me the 'add to VLC playlist' option like it should) and I selected "Open with" and "choose another app", I then chose VLC. This should have done nothing. But I saw my desktop icons flicker as it reloaded all Explorer instances with the new change. That was when the right-click got fixed. I could then right-click on any mp4 file and see 'add to VLC playlist' again. Even the most seemingly pointless-to-try things sometimes has a positive effect.

Thanks @Hitchhiker for that ++ suggestion. I might be trying that one day :-)

I suspect another program did this to me - maybe my Video editor when it did an update.
