No problem here.

Be more specific if you have streaming issues with youtube. For example, provide the link to the video.

For what it's worth I just tried the link on FF91 and it plays without a problem.

Maybe you might want to clear your FF Profile "storage" ---> "default" folder of youtube links. Any "moz-extension+++" links you see in there belong to any addons you have installed.

OK, first a quickie on how to navigate to the correct folder on FF.
  1. In the address bar where you'd normally type a URL, type: about:profiles and hit Enter.
  2. In the list of Profiles (if you have more than one) you'll see a blue box on the left with "Default Profile", "Root Directory" and "Local directory" stacked on top of one another. To the right of Root Directory click the "Open Folder" button.
  3. In the list open the storage folder and then open the default folder.
  4. The default folder contains a list of sites you've visited together with a list of the addons you have installed. Sites can store data in the default folder which can be used to track you around the Internet.
  5. Click the sites you don't want and then delete them. They will be transferred to Windows Recycle bin so you'll have to empty that as well occasionally.
Here's a picture of my own default folder which contains a link to a youtube video I watched earlier (I deleted it immediately afterwards). The moz-extensions have all been left untouched. It means the developers can track me, but I don't use Firefox that much so there's nothing for them to gain.

No.
  1. In the address bar type (or copy/paste from here) about:preferences#privacy and hit Enter.
  2. In the left hand menu click Privacy & Security. Scroll down to Cookies and Site Data and click the Manage Data button.
There's also the option to "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed". You can click the "Manage Exceptions" button to make a list of sites you want to keep cookies for.

Here is an example of a YouTube video that still doesn't play (Media > Open Network Stream):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Dwy-H30TA0
Interestingly, if I try to stream it and I hit play, it shows the thumbnail, but that's it.
I tried changing the .luac file but that doesn't help.

Confirmed. It's more or less the same problem as mentioned in this post: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=157945

Pastebin log: https://pastebin.com/CEu5gSB7

Even FFmpeg won't download it either as per the screenshot.

Image

However, you can download it using youtube-dl which is a command line application: https://youtube-dl.org/
Here's the download command: youtube-dl -f22+140 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Dwy-H30TA0

If you decide to go ahead you'll also need to download FFmpeg which will merge both the audio and video streams. It downloads in Zip format so you'll need an application such as WinRAR or 7Zip (the latter is free) to unzip it. All three exe files can be found in the bin directory. Move all three to your C:\Users\Username directory where the youtube-dl.exe should be placed.

If you're willing to jump through hoops i.e. create a new account on Gitlab and enable 2FA you can file it as a bug at
https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues Click the blue New Issues button top right.

Thanks, that youtube-dl program looks very useful. :)

As mentioned before, I believe you can avoid 2FA by creating an account with GitLab.com (https://gitlab.com/users/sign_up) and using that account to log in to code.videolan.org.

Tell you what Vampiros: why don't you do the honours and go file the bug for us?

P.S. Having a Gitlab account doesn't allow you to escape the 2FA requirement on the code.videolan site. ;)

Your word is my command. Bug filed (https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues/26060) with screenshot added later. I hope I didn't forget any details.

And amazingly, this was done with a GitLab.com account but no 2FA was requested or required. :D

Thanks for the upload.

Interesting observation: I downloaded your log and then ran the same yt link to create my own log. My log contains the CONSENT PENDING flag while yours doesn't. Here's a pix of the two compared.

I've always assumed that it's the same consent cookie problem, but your log would seem to disagree with that.

I'll have to have another go at opening a Gitlab a/c. Maybe they've changed their policy and have dropped the 2FA requirement.

The bug has been judged identical to https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues/25988 and hence the report has been closed. It seems that a patch to the LUA file has been created but they are having trouble integrating it. The bug is apparently related to a "descrambling function", but I don't understand any more than that.

I tried creating several logs and noticed that the "CONSENT=PENDING" cookie only appeared the first time I tried to play the YouTube stream. If I kept VLC Media Player running and tried to play the stream again, there was no "CONSENT=PENDING" in the logs generated for attempts after the first, but the error was the same. So I agree - I guess that means it's not related to the consent cookie.

The trick to avoid 2FA is more complex than I thought. I was able to create a GitLab.com account back in April which does not ask for a 2FA "PIN" when I sign in at code.videolan.org, but I can't remember exactly how I did it. I think the trick might involve going through two-step authentification but only having to do it once. So you will temporarily need some kind of "desktop application" like Authy or oathtool or WinAuth. I cannot guarantee success, but if you want to try it, do the following:

1. If you don't already have one, create an account at https://gitlab.com/users/sign_up.
2. At https://gitlab.com/-/profile/account make sure Two-Factor Authentication is disabled.
3. Go to https://code.videolan.org/users/sign_in and sign in using the GitLab.com account.
4. Use your 2FA "desktop application" to generate the required 2FA PIN using the alphanumeric "code" instead of the QR code.
5. Once you are completely signed in and can access your profile at https://code.videolan.org/-/profile, sign out.
6. Go to https://gitlab.com/ and sign out there as well.
7. Go back to https://code.videolan.org/users/sign_in and try signing in (again) using the GitLab.com account.
8. If all goes well, the sign-in should take place without asking for a 2FA PIN.

VLC 9-3-21

Hello everyone.
So the past couple of days I have been trying to get YouTube to work on VLC and I've had absolutely no success. I have tried everything from older versions to the current version. I've even upgraded the youtube.luac to the latest version and still no luck. I always get a error 403 or it just doesn't work at all. I am at a loss on what's going on here. Can someone please help

I've been experimenting with this on Windows 10, but unfortunately it won't work on Linux either

Would appreciate any help anyone here can give me
Ray

No problem with it here.

A 403 error means the server understood the request, but blocked access.

Are you logged into Youtube or Google using a browser? If so, log out and then try to play the video again.

So I logged out of my Google account and try the same video again and I had no success. This is what came up

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'https://r5---sn-o097znsk.googlevideo.co ... QRw8JQ0qOA'. Check the log for details.

In the settings. I also turned on. This log and this is what it showed

-- logger module started --
main: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
lua error: Couldn't process youtube video URL, please check for updates to this script
access error: HTTP 403 error
-- logger module stopped --
