VLC Win XP can't view streamed media

Postby vjmandala » 21 Jul 2021 15:11

Greets all, first time poster here :)

Am running 3 PC's atm:
Win 7 (VLC 3.0.0) Streaming out via Port 8086
Win 10 (VLC 3.0.12) Streaming out via Port 8084
Win XP (VLC 3.0.12) Streaming out via Port 8087
Runnin a TP-Link Wifi local area network. Have added all 3 Port Exceptions above into Win XP Firewall.

Am streaming out of each PC and receiving from each PC at different times, testing really.
What I really need is Win XP to be able to receive any streams from Win 7/10 or other.

So Win 7 & 10 can see/hear each others streams and see/hear the Win XP stream (via HTTP as 'audio mp3' or 'Video H264+mp3).
I use VLC on my iPh and can view all 3 above Win XP/7/10 flavors no probs.

But, Win XP cant view any of the other two Win PC's (7/10) at all. I get this error below when I try to 'Open Network Stream' on Win 7 or 10:

Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'http://192.168.0.104:8084'. Check the log for details.

Not sure what else to tell yaz??? Bit lost! Can anyone offer any assist please? Willing to offer a warm cooked dinner :)

https://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation ... ng_the_GUI

It's also advisable to update to the latest version of vlc which is 3.0.16 since earlier versions are vulnerable to the exploit described in this article: https://positive.security/blog/url-open-rce#vlc

In addition, please see this Videolan bulletin regarding automatic updates:

Thanks Hitchhiker, have updated all VLC app on all PC's, cheers. That tutorial was helpful, particularly that it enlightened me to try another VLC client on same host Windows XP PC, so cant even see its own stream on the local PC. Where as the other PC's can see themselves fine. I have tried turning off firewall all together, but no dif. Any advice would be most helpful cheers.

See if this Homegroup networking tutorial helps: Share files between Windows XP-7-10

Thank again HH!! Did all that. My Win7 sharing folders well with XP. Have even turned off the Firewall Service completely.
Same deal happening, well not happening, if I stream audio (http, as mp3) in VLC running on Windows XP still cant run another VLC instance to open that Network Stream, let alone another PC that is streaming. Something internal going on! :(

Window XP is so old now that bugs are creeping in all the time. As can be seen in the post at the bottom of this thread the devs are not going to take any steps to make vlc work with it: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 91#p514991

If you can't get it to work in the same way as your Win 7 / 10 machines then it's maybe time to consign your XP machine to history.

Im hearing ya mate and with you on that point HH, the only reason I am on this XP/VLC trail is because I spent $100 US on a VGA Wireless USB Manager so I can send a VGA video signal to my lounge room projector. I wanted to be able to stream A/V from my laptop to the WinXP using VLC (cos is dam cool bit of s/w) then on to the projector. I am sooo close hehe. I appreciate your time and comments mate.

NOTE. Above in this thread you posted a ref to https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 91#p514991. Where the User iZqLGKmguN states
All these videos are perfectly played in VLC 2.2.6 and in "Light Allow", but they are not played in VLC 3.0.3.
So I installed 2.2.6 and it worked, both instances of VLC on same XP PC can now stream A/V!!
So you accidentally pointed me to the solutions ya legend  hehe.
Forever grateful HH  :)

Great thanks to You guy! Just downgraded to 2.2.6 and updated it's youtube.luac to recent official one, and this oldie's now playing HD youtubes on XP. Whole lot of merited gratitude :)
