How to record sound when recording desktop screen?

Why doesn't VLC record sound when you are recording your desktop? Does it? How?

Desktop capture doesn't have the ability to capture audio, only video.

I do not know your OS. I can right-click the speaker icon in system tray > recording devices > right-click there > show hidden devices > right-click the Stereo Mix > Enable. I can also check its properties there. That works but only if I set it to just audio mp3. Rather annoying. No way to record both at same time?
