After some videos, they don't close fully and thus don't open properly again - only fixes with sign out / reboot

After opening X amount of videos at a time (could be 10, could be 50), the next time I open a video, it'll open the player but just show the black screen with the VLC logo.

If I sign out of Windows 10 and sign back in (or reboot), it works again.

I've found this is because at some point a video doesn't close properly, so the logo will still be in my taskbar after closing. Right clicking it and trying to exit it that way does nothing to it. I can end the process to get rid of it in the taskbar, but then try to open another video, I get the same thing. Resetting preferences, cache, updating, reinstalling doesn't work. Videos will still work in other players like Windows Media Player.

It doesn't even close the player let alone the process too.

I have to reboot the PC anyway after doing that, though trying it without rebooting doesn't change anything.

Which version of Windows 10 are you running? Open the run command and type WINVER if you don't know.

Also, what's your hardware, specifically the GPU.

64-bit Windows 10 Pro

It's a 980 TI with a Ryzen 3600, 16GB RAM and SSD as the boot drive which VLC's installed on and that I'm accessing files from.

I would still like to know which version you have installed i.e. 1909, 2004, 20H2 etc, etc.

It's a fresh install on the new SSD. It's 20H2, might've been through a few previous versions too.

I think your machine is simply running out of system resources. Unlike RAM any computer system has a limited number of resources and once they're all used up applications will become unresponsive. That would seem to be confirmed by the fact that when you reboot it resolves the issue. Rebooting also resets the network stack.

You mentioned earlier that Ctrl + Q fails to close vlc. You should be able to close it from a command prompt with taskkill /im vlc.exe if it becomes unresponsive.

Also, check other running tasks in Task Manager. Some of them may be unnecessary and can be closed to free up resources.

I'm able to do whatever and play demanding games after though, it's just VLC acting up. Remember WMP can still play videos when VLC won't.

WMP is integrated into the Windows OS and therefore behaves differently than a third party application.
