100 % CPU utilization in new windows10 PC

Postby plaurits » 26 Jun 2020 10:37

Hi forum
I just wonder if it is correct that vlc player uses appr. 100% CPU on my new shuttle DS10U5 with 16 GB ram when playing 4k or 8k videos downloaded from youtube.
Memory utilization ~ 46%, which is OK.
It does play correctly though, but obviously I can’t do much other things when video is playing.

DS10U5 has an Intel UHD Graphics 620, right ?

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload your original problematic file to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to WeTransfer.com and then post the link to the file here.
https://www.zippyshare.com
https://wetransfer.com

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 35#p193335
100 MB max should be enough.

Also note that player MUST know that GPU is Intel 620.
Otherwise all load is on CPU, and not on GPU.

Hi,
Full log already uploaded to pastebin.com.
Without the pastebin link to your paste, it's not really useful :)
main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 42172 ms)
It usually means that your hardware is not able to decode the video, or that you're not using hardware acceleration.

1. link is https://pastebin.com/hbQs5Z6b
2. as said I think main issue that your player does not recognize the GPU Intel 620
3. hw acceleration enabled and video is playing correctly, however it goes to 100% CPU while playing

I find the two Messages from the Log-File.
warning: failed to read the 1 Display Adapter registry key (2)
warning: can't find adapter in registry

I belief, thats the Reason (Display Adapter) for the Trouble with 4k-Video in Your Computer.

I would reinstall the "Intel UHD Graphic 620" Driver for the "Shuttle DS10U5" Computer.
- https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... s-620.html

Have a Look for the Manufactor Drivers, include an BIOS Update from 28.04.2020

Hi
Thanks for response. Intel UHD Graphic 620 already checked.

Test file used here is: https://youtu.be/LXb3EKWsInQ downloaded via 4Kvideodownloader in 4k resolution.
I have same issue with other 4K videos downloaded same way.

Meanwhile I verified that the "movies and TV" app in windows10 manages to play the 4K video after installation of app “AV1 video extension”.
It does so with CPU load of around 30% and GPU load of around 45%, which is OK.

So issue is still I think that for some reason vlc does not utilize GPU correctly for this type of 4K video, meaning that CPU is getting overloaded.

I can play the Youtube Video "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXb3EKWsInQ" direct with VLC-Player 3.0.11 under Windows 10 with "Intel UHD Graphics 630" and "Intel core i7-9700" CPU successfull.
My with DisplayPort connected Monitor use 2.560×1.440 Pixel Resolution, by GPU = 25% and CPU = 3% workload.

1) You could copy the Video from the User-Directory to a local Directory like C:\Video\ or C:\Temp\ and open it in VLC-Player from the new Directory.
main debug: attachment of directory-extractor failed for file:///C:/Users/peter/Videos/4k/4k%20-%20COSTA%20RICA%20IN%204K%2060fps%20HDR%20(ULTRA%20HD).mp4

2) Did You install the BIOS-Update ("DS10U000.103.zip") from 28.04.2020 for Shuttle DS10U-Series?
http://global.shuttle.com/products/prod ... uctId=2403

3) Other Drivers for Shuttle D10U-Series:
http://global.shuttle.com/products/prod ... &panelId=2

4) You could uninstall an install the latest VLC-Player (3.0.11) with manually delete of Cache and Preferences in the De- and Install-Dialogue Windows.

Hi
As mentioned my setup is slightly different: DS10U5 including intel UHD Graphics 620 with 24 P2415Q Dell monitor attached via DP cable.

Ad 1: Have tried, no change
Ad 2: No, I am on 1.02. But as movie TV app is having no issue, I don’t see the need to upgrade BIOS at this point. Let’s rather systematically troubleshoot issue, e.g. from logs.
Ad 3: OK
Ad 4: OK, no change, new log added as https://pastebin.com/zrMuwvxu and screenshot into https://ibb.co/CbbRtLq

1) Find some more Messages in the Log-File.
direct3d11 warning: failed to read the 1 Display Adapter registry key (2)
direct3d11 warning: can't find adapter in registry
...
main debug: Program doesn't contain anymore ES
main debug: dead input
main debug: nothing to play
qt debug: IM: Deleting the input

2) Because the Issue with the Display Driver I would uninstall the Display-Driver in the Controlmenu of Windows OS and restart the Computer.
Before uninstalling the Display-Driver download the latest Display-Driver for "Dell P2415Q" on your Computer.
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us ... or/drivers

3) You can reset the Intel Graphic with [ Win ] + [Ctrl] + [Shift] + [ b ].
The Screen flickers and one Beep is listen.

4) Insert in the Windows Startmenu dxdiag and save all the Info to Pastebin.
There is a View which Driver are installed on the Computer.

The downloaded 4k-Youtube-Video "COSTA RICA IN 4K 60fps HDR (ULTRA HD).mp4" start and play for some Secounds, bevor the Image stand and the Audio plays alone.

I tested with "D3D9 Output" in VLC-Player 3.0.11 (64-Bit) and got 100% CPU-Power with 15% GPU-usage.

- Windows 10
- CPU Intel Core i7-9700
- Intel UHD Graphics 630
- 25"-Monitor 2.560×1.440 Pixel

fine, that’s almost the same I am observing. And almost same pattern with 5k player.
But as mentioned same video is playing fine with movies & TV app in this PC.
Hence I don’t see this as an issue with windows10 or HW.
So how to proceed with this issue?
