4K Smooth for 10 secs then CRASH!

Postby mBrane » 28 May 2020 05:47

I have an HEVC backup of a UHD Blu-ray (about 68 GB). When I play it in VLC 3.00.10, it plays smoothly and looks great... for about 10 seconds! I can even skip around quickly and freely during that time, but then Windows 10 (64-bit) completely freezes. I mean mouse frozen. Not running slowly: locked up and needs reset.

Not a CPU or overheating issue. I’ve tried forcing DXVA 2,0. Same result. I have two 680 GTXs and have tried in SLI and not in SLI. Any ideas where to begin troubleshooting this? Sooooo disappointed. This rig is a 24x7 workhorse and gaming hoss, so just don’t know where to take this next. Thoughts?

If you're using VLC 3.0.x and have video issues.
Try:

  1. Preferences -> Input/Codecs -> Disable hw decoding
  2. If you are a Windows user, Preferences -> Video -> Change from direct3d11 to direct3d9
If any solution works, please tell us which one solved your case, Please also quote your video driver name and version.
:!: If you want your problem to be solved :
* First read troubleshooting guide VSG:Main
* Always provide verbose LOGS ! (command line or from gui)
* Always check your issue against a developer build from Nightly Build of VLC
* Tell us when your problem is solved !

Same result as leaving both on “automatic.” Same result as forcing DXVA 2.0. Went smoothly for about 8 seconds (windowed mode) then system freeze.

* video driver crash (you can still fully disable video)
* out of memory
* storage failure on read

32GB RAM and no errors on NTFS volume. HOWEVER...!!! Playing with video disabled WORKED! That's *really* encouraging! (I will say that seeking is kinda goofy, though, as skipping forward causes entire file to be read beyond skip point, then playback resumes at skip point).

Nonetheless, *no* crash!!! So, I always have the latest NVIDIA driver for my 680GTXs. Assuming that either 1) 680GTX, even though 4K capable, cannot playback 4K or 2) something with SLI, even though I've tried with it disabled. You're on a roll! Where do we go from here? Thx, again!

Can you try with the open GL or Direct3D9 outputs ? I assume you're using the Direct3d11 one.

How canyou be sure your system is not out of memory and is swapping to death (mouse freeze) ?
BD title info ?

I guess, for starters, are you saying that 32GB is not enough to play a 4K Bluray? I know that available memory varies from system to system, but I have everything but VLC closed and no crazy services running.

Also, my swap and temp files are on mechanical drives and I hear nor see any thrashing. More importantly, even under heavy thrashing, *eventually* the mouse will move, clock will update, etc. I can wait 5 minutes or more with *no* signs of activity (or thrashing). I *could* rig up some more sophisticated monitoring, but now that we know that the MKV plays fine with video disabled, doesn't that lead us in other directions?

What if you don't start from beginning ?
There's always a reason to crash a driver. ex: unsupported format change

Also you don't show logs
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

Will play around with this, but it’s one continuous rip from MakeMKV. I doubt we’re talking about a format change during this single segment. Will also work on collecting some meaningful logs. I sincerely appreciate the continued ideas. Thank you!

Replaced with 1080 Ti FTW3 Hydro Copper. Problem solved.
