VLC no sound in the speakers only headphones

Postby jfp01 » 29 Mar 2020 11:39

I am using VLC 2.2.6 Umbrella under Windows XP.
I only hear the sound of the videos .mp4 with the headphones and not on the speaker output.
VLC version 2.0.5 Twoflower works very well.
Can you tell me how to make it work?
Without telling me to change the system Windows XP.
Thank you for your help

Right click the speaker icon in the systray and click Playback devices. Click Speakers to highlight and then click Apply/OK.

Sorry but I don't have Playback device when I right click on the speaker icon. I have "adjust the audio properties".
I don't think it's a Windows problem because the VLC version 2.0.5 Twoflower works very well with the speaker.

Try upgrading to 3.0.8 which is the latest version. Win XP is supported provided you have SP3 installed:

I have already tried VLC 3.0.8 and the result is the same.
I only hear the sound of the videos .mp4 with the headphones and not on the speaker output.

I just reinstalled VLC 3.0.8 with reset Preferences. Still no sound in the speakers with a .mp4 video.

Open "Sound" in Windows Control Panel and check what devices are enabled in there. I seem to recall it was called something else back in Win XP days but it's too long ago to remember what it was exactly. If you can't see "Sound" anywhere in Win CP, try "Audio".

Do you have XP Home or the Pro version? Also, do you have Dolby Home Theater installed?

I have XP Média center Edition SP 3 Version 2002 and Dolby Home Theater is not installed.
I checked in the Control Panel all the audio devices are active and working properly.

There's a good troubleshooting site illustrated with screenshots for your problem here: https://pcauthorities.com/windows-xp/how-to-troubleshoot-sound-problems-in-windows-xp/

How can I send you the .mp4 file which works very well with VLC version 2.0.5 and not with version 3.0.8.
Perhaps you can know what is the difference between these 2 versions?

You can upload the file to https://zippyshare.com/ (maximum 500MB) and then post the link to it here.

If it's more than 500MB split it using DGSplit. See: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335

By the way, there's an option to switch the audio to speakers by clicking Audio on the vlc toolbar and then Audio device on the submenu. But I assumed speakers are checkmarked already.

Plays without a problem on my system which is Windows 8.1

Ingenious method of making music by the way. I know that trick to make a sound by running a wet finger around an empty glass, but the duo in the video have made it a fine art.

Yes it also works on my laptop under Windows 10, but not on my desktop under Windows XP. There is still a difference between the 2 versions of VLC. What does version 8.0.3 use for sound that version 2.0.5 does not use or vice versa?

It's not really practical to try and make a comparison between a very old version of vlc and the latest release simply due to the way the changelog is compiled. Differences can only be compared easily between a given release and the next one.

You might try disabling hardware-acceleration decoding on your XP machine to see if it makes any difference.
It's located in Tools ---> Preferences ---> Input/Codecs.

Sorry but I can't find this "hardware acceleration decoding" option in Tools ---> Preferences ---> Input / Codecs. In which section is it?

It's possible that it didn't exist in 2.05 or maybe it's located elsewhere. Here's a pix off what it looks like in 3.0.8 http://imgbox.com/EO7JgP23

Try experimenting with the audio output options in the Tools ---> Preferences ---> Audio menu. Here's a screenshot:

No option of "Output module" changes anything (only sound in headphones), except "Dummy audio output" and "Disable" which suppress the sound.

Not having much luck are we?

In Win XP go to Control Panel. If you get the Category view when you do that change it to Small Icons via the link top right.

Next, click Sound and Audio Devices. You should be able to see something which looks like the left hand menu in this screenshot:
http://imgbox.com/Byg4VRMY

If you see Speakers click it to highlight and then click the Properties button and check to make sure "Use this device" is enabled. Now go back to the previous menu and then click the Configure button at the bottom. Click the Test button and hopefully XP will perform some magic and you'll hear something.

If you get an error doing any of these things please post the full message without paraphasing.

Well I guess it doesn't help if we have a language problem thrown into the equation as well.

Can you go through the troubleshooting steps on this site to see if any of them help:

Salut,

Bonne chance.
