VLC ignores my preferred audio track language but MPC doesn't

Postby VLCFanNumber1 » 06 Sep 2019 15:16

Hello,

VLC ignores my preferred audio track language. I set it to french ("fra"), but when I play a video, VLC keeps selecting english (the 1st audio track).

You will easily understand with this video I made to explain you :

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Cedric.

Try with "fr" or "fre".
But the english track is being marked as the default one, so I'm not sure the VLC settings can override that.
In this case you need to remux the file with the french track marked as the default one.

Thanks for trying to help, but it doesn't work with "fre" nor "fr".

Not sure how to set a track as default. When I remuxed that video with AVI Demux, I didn't mark any track as default, I'm learning it from you.

And it didn't work either with the remuxed video ?
Can you post the MediaInfo report of the remuxed video ?

AVI Demux doesn't allow to set a track as default, it just allows to define an order. The Media Info I posted above is from a video I remuxed myself without defining a default track so I'm a bit confused that you said that the english track was the default track.

Hi again. Now I can prove that it is a bug of VLC because MPC recognizes my preferred language as you can see in this video :

I hope VLC fixes this bug in a future update

Yes, confirmed, I can reproduce the issue. It looks like a bug because VLC can't override the default audio track while some other players can do it.

You should create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with the links to a sample of a problematic file and to this thread.
https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/

Workaround:

Download the GPAC framework:
https://gpac.wp.imt.fr/downloads/

You don't need to install the whole thing, open the installer with 7zip and extract js.dll, libgpac.dll and mp4box.exe into the same folder where you have full write access.
Drop a copy of your original video into this folder as well (always work on a copy of the original video file, you have been warned!).

Open a command prompt and type this:
mp4box "PutYourFileNameHere.mp4" -disable 2 -enable 3

This is making the french audio track as the default one and VLC will play it by default.

I will add the Link to the Trac-Number for a better overview.

Code: Select all

https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/22741
I can confirm the issue with not working change of the prefered audio-language in VLC-Player 3.0.7.1 (64-Bit) under OS Microsoft Windows.

Here is an other Video-Example with Japan Language for testing:

Code: Select all

https://www.file-upload.net/download-13813863/ajin.mp4.html
There are some Standards for Language Codes with two, three or numeric letters.
ISO 639-2 (three letter)

ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 (two letter)

ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 (three letter)

ISO 3166-1 numeric (numeric)

I don't know which one is the best solution?
Possible Example for prefered Japanese Language:

Code: Select all

jp,jpn,Japanese,392,any
Any shall be used for select other Language in the VLC-Player behind the prefered, right?

Somewhere I read, that Language Codes should write in small form letters and Country-Codes should write in upper case letters.
