VLC 3.0.7.1: Shortcut to playlist disappeard

Postby mitchma » 15 Jun 2019 10:51

I've just upgraded to VLC 3.0.7.1
Now, I can not longer access my playlist via shortcut (CTRL+L).
Anybody here with the same problem?

Hi mitchma,

i got to experience exactly the same problem as you.

The problem is, quite obvious, that the shortcut for "Hide/Show playlist" (which is normally set to "CTRL" + "L") has been removed
by the latest update (i have no clue yet why that is the case). I updated the VLC from 3.0.6 to 3.0.7.1 due to a very simple reason: security.

As everybody can read here:
https://www.videolan.org/vlc/releases/3.0.7.html -> Numerous security issues:
1 high security issue, 21 medium and 20 low security issues were fixed,
ranging from integer overflow to buffer overflows, with out-of-read violations and stack overflows.

First of all: that's good news, for all of us. BUT it is a shame, that shortcuts get removed without any further announcements or explanation.

And, as of now, i do not see any further possibility to re-add this shortcut into the VLC other than re-building from the source code on my own.
But i guess, not every day-to-day user will be able to do the same, so it would be nice to re-add all missing shortcuts in the next update.

Is anyone from the VLC development team present and can comment ?

That would be great, thanks!

Hi. as far as I know, no shortcut has been removed and it's working on linux (which is basically the same code as windows) so it would be a bug or an issue from your side.

Well, there are some people complaining about this, so I guess something happened which might be language related:

Hi unidan,
hi Lotesdelere,

first of all, thanks for your fast replies, appreciate it !

I just checked the thing with the language via:
Tools -> Settings -> Interface Settings -> Language -> Menu language

For me, it was set to: Auto (which is the default value, i guess)

Now, my windows machine is running on OS language "German", so VLC was also running "German" via "Auto" language setting.
Then, i switched the VLC language setting to "American English" and restarted VLC.. and as Lotesdelere already has assumed absolutely right:
the shortcut "Hide/Show Playlist" is magically back again and i can also use "CTRL" + "L" again.

So, it is definitely language related, that's all i can say for now.
Therefore, as i see it right now, it seems to be a language related bug on the side of VLC (since update 3.0.7.1).

As a temporary workaround, i switched my VLC language settings now to "American English" (for as long as it needs to be).
Nonetheless, i hope this can be fixed for any affected language, so that i can have VLC in "German" back again, with all shortcuts working properly.

That would be great ! :-)

Any further comments on this issue ?

Will this bug be tracked by someone from VLC and fixed with the next update ?

I can also open a bug ticket for that, if you guys tell me which bug tracker VLC dev is currently using.

Hi,

It seems weird, it might be an issues with the locale but it shouldn't affect this as it is handled by Qt.
You can try creating a ticket on https://trac.videolan.org but it might be unrelated to VLC.

Hi unidan,

all right, i will see what i can accomplish on https://trac.videolan.org.
But in case it is really unrelated to VLC, i would be in the wrong spot, i guess.

So, is there any way to trace down this issue to its origin ?
Would be, from my pov, an advantage to report / address the problem in the right place.

I guess VLC has also some extensive built-in logging feature(s).
Maybe i can try to collect those first and post them here, would that help ?

Also, since there does not seem to be a solution for:
-> https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=149771
yet, my guess still is, that something has been messed up since the last update, one way or the other.
I have tested it now on several Windows operating systems (Win 7, 8, 8.1, 10) and it can be reproduced
everywhere, whenever "Auto" is set as VLC language and the OS is running "German" as its language.

The shortcut CTRL + L still doesn't show / hide the playlist. Version 3.0.8

Hi,
in 3.0.11 the shortcut is still gone (not working + not existing in the settings).

{Other language-issues are also existing in the German GUI, e.g. duplicate menu shortcut characters for [&Audio] and [&Ansicht], both using [Alt]+[A] which leads to a confusing behaviour.}
