New version cannot play second title on DVD.

Postby DrHow » 18 Apr 2019 16:37

On March 16, VLC announced to me that it had downloaded a new version. So I let it install. I think it is broken. I made a DVD with 2 titles using DVDFlick. VLC plays the first title just fine. However, going to the second title fails. It does play the audio, but the video is stuck on a frame from the first title. If I open the DVD to look at the files and double click on the video.ts file which was not playing, it does play. So it is on the DVD.

My initial reaction was that DVDFlick had fouled up in some way. This was surprising, as I had made a great many 10s of such 2-title DVDs on previous occasions without encountering any problems. Nevertheless, I went ahead and created a different 2-title DVD from a different pair of videos. Same problem!

Then I remembered that I had allowed VLC to update itself. I took one of those DVDs to my Linux Mint machine, and the second title would play as usual. So the problem appeared to be with the new Windows version of VLC. I discovered that I still had an installer for V2.2.1 in my Downloads folder, so I installed it on my Windows machine. Works fine.

I suspect a bug. Any advice?

If you're using VLC 3.0.x and have video issues.
Try:

  1. Preferences -> Input/Codecs -> Disable hw decoding
  2. If you are a Windows user, Preferences -> Video -> Change from direct3d11 to direct3d9
If any solution works, please tell us which one solved your case, Please also quote your video driver name and version.
:!: If you want your problem to be solved :
* First read troubleshooting guide VSG:Main
* Always provide verbose LOGS ! (command line or from gui)
* Always check your issue against a developer build from Nightly Build of VLC
* Tell us when your problem is solved !

This looks to me like a boilerplate response which fails to address the fact that VLC CAN PLAY the second title just fine if I point it directly to the to the .ts file on the DVD. I.e., whatever is the problem, it is above the driver level issues which this response seems to be dealing with.

I will go ahead and reinstall the latest version and try those suggestions if someone can assure me that they actually make sense given my symptoms.

DVDs are a bit more than just a collection of TS files. Disabling hardware decoding can help a lot, notably when transitioning between files.
