In my Windows version of VLC, I noticed there is a Fingerprint option located under Tools -> Code Information -> General.
Can someone please tell me what it does?
I clicked on it whilst playing a file. An Audio Fingerprint message box popped up, then after a while, it stated no fingerprints were found.
What was it doing and does it change / delete anything?

So it doesn't alter the file (it's an mkv film file) in any way, if it doesn't manage to find any fingerprints?It's trying to find, on an online database, the information about this song.
