4K video stops (lag issue)

Postby johnhoward28 » 24 Mar 2019 18:57

Okay. I just want to let you know that So, I did a lot of searching and tried every solution I found. None of them have helped. This was not my first stop.

Here is my issue. 4K videos play smoothly for about 3 seconds and then freeze up for a second and then play for 3 more seconds and then stop for a second. These same videos play smoothly with no issues on the same PC in Windows Movies & TV player and Windows Media Player. So, the issue is not with PC hardware. My PC is a newer custom build with a Ryzen 5 2600 CPU, 16GB ram, Nvidia GeForce 1050 GPU, and Samsung Evo 850 SSD; running Windows 10 Pro.

I am using VLC 3.06. Most of the solutions start by telling you to download VLC 3.0 and enable "GUP Acceleration" from the "Codecs/Input" window. Well, guess what. That option does not exist in VLC 3.06.

So what is the problem here?

Hi, please share your logs.
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

@unidan

Same issue here but it's about every 23-24 seconds for me. Logs below. Let me know if you need something else.

Decided to look over the logs myself. Many entries calling out Cisco Webex. Interestingly enough, I killed that process and no lag at all.

Logs after killing Cisco Webex:

Code: Select all

main debug: picture might be displayed late (missing 5 ms) main debug: picture might be displayed late (missing 3 ms) main debug: picture might be displayed late (missing 4 ms) main debug: picture might be displayed late (missing 3 ms) main debug: picture might be displayed late (missing 3 ms) main debug: picture might be displayed late (missing 3 ms) main debug: picture might be displayed late (missing 2 ms) main debug: picture might be displayed late (missing 6 ms)
Be nice to know what the conflict is there.

EDIT: Apologies to OP. Didn't mean to hijack your thread :)

Is it any better if you use DirectX audio output ?
You need to exit and restart VLC after changing this setting.

Hi

Code: Select all

main debug: picture might be displayed late (missing 2 ms)
It means the pictures are displayed a bit late, so your setup is too slow. Either it's because you don't have hardware acceleration or that your computer/graphic card/CPU (depending on what you're using) isn't fast enough.
Would you have full playback logs ?

Ryzen 5 2600 CPU, 16GB ram, Nvidia GeForce 1050 GPU, and Samsung Evo 850 SSD

I bet the hardware is not the culprit ;-)

For hardware acceleration try this:

Tools -> Preferences -> Video
Output = Direct3D11
Tools -> Preferences -> Input/Codecs
Hardware accelerated decoding = D3D11 Video Acceleration

or this:
Tools -> Preferences -> Video
Output = Direct3D9
Tools -> Preferences -> Input/Codecs
Hardware accelerated decoding = DXVA 2.0

And save, exit and restart VLC after changing the settings.

Also try to change the audio output as I suggested here:

Still, check drivers too :)
