VLC 3.0.4 poor performance with H.265 mkv

Postby hazardass » 14 Nov 2018 00:38

Win 7 x64, 4790K, GTX 980

Frequent micro-stutters during playback, CPU usage is about 25%.
During fastforwad / rewind, CPU jumps to 60-70%, and every jump takes a few second before playback resumes. That's horrible, and not what I am used to with H.264.

MPC-HC, on the other hand, plays H.265 MUCH smother. No stuttering, CPU is at 12% during normal playback, and about 45-50% when jumping through the video, but most importantly it takes almost no time to resume playback.

VLC has been my go-to player for many years, but now I have no choice but to switch to MPC because I've been converting my videos to H265. Any suggestions to improve playback in VLC would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I have the same Problem.
I have tried Ryzen 2400g, two diffrent NV GT1030 and now a NV GTX 1050 TI.

Ryzen:
With activated Hadware Acceleration I get a black/green screen(DXVA2+d3d11)CPU <5% GPU <50%. with deactivated HA stuttering CPU 50% GPU <5%.
NVIDA1030/1050:
Stuttering with or without HA (DXVA2+d3d11). 1030 = CPU <5% GPU 50% - with HDR GPU 75%

With MPC it works fine.

I have tested a 2160p movie with AVC. Thats works.
I have tested a 1080p movie with HEVC. Thats works.

Only "Real" 4k Movies (2160p+HEVC) didn´t work.

Can you post the full verbose log of video playback ?
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.
It might be your drivers or the renderer you use. You can change renderer from d3d11 to d3d9 in the settings, but please stil send us the logs and tell us if it works :)

Can you post the full verbose log of video playback ?
My rendering was set to automatic by default. I tried changing to d3d9 and d3d11 but it didn't affect the performance.

In the log below I noticed that whenever there was a noticeable micro freeze in the video, it created a group of 3 warning lines in the log that look like this:

main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 78 ms)
main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 46 ms)
main warning: picture is too late to be displayed (missing 42 ms)

On average this happens probably once every 5-10 seconds in this type of video. When I play it with MPC-HC 1.7.17, playback is as smooth as a baby's butt. Not a hint of freezing.
The buffering sequence toward the end happened when I did a 10 second forward jump, which took about 2 seconds seek time. That's too long.

Re: VLC 3.0.4 poor performance with H.265 mkv

Postby hazardass » 23 Dec 2018 11:10
