You've run into the same problem as I did over here: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=146547

In my particular case I've checked everything that could prevent the video from streaming and came up with a blank. My own assessment is that Google wants users to watch videos on the youtube site (think ads!) and if it detects that users are avoiding that by using VLC, it starts blocking access.

I don't think it's a settings issue since I can stream this awe inspiring video without a problem along with several others. I just can't stream the one in my OP.

There are several threads on the subject in this forum dating back to 2014 such as this one so it's not an unknown issue and I'm sure the devs are aware of it, but cannot fix it since it's not VLC which is at fault.

OK, fixed it!

Contrary to my former statement that Google might be blocking access to certain videos it appears to be a simple case of a transmission protocol having changed on YT, but not yet updated in VLC.

All users need to do is to download a copy of the latest youtube.luac file and then overwrite the one in your VLC installation folder. To copy the latest file, go to this Videolan site and hit CTRL+A to highlight everything and then either right click and Copy, or hit CTRL+C

Next, open Notepad and either right click and Paste, or hit CTRL+V

Next, click File ---> Save As and give it the name youtube.luac
Where it says "Save as type" below that, make sure you change "Text Documents (.txt)" to All Files via the dropdown menu otherwise you'll get a file called youtube.luac.txt which won't work.

If you downloaded the 64-bit version of VLC, the path to the youtube.luac file which was installed along with the VLC player is as follows:

• C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\playlist

If you're using the 32-bit version the path is:

• C:\Program Files(x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\playlist

It's a good idea to make a copy of the existing youtube.luac file just in case things go pear-shaped, but it shouldn't be necessary.

OK, I understand it might be a bit confusing for some so here's a screenshot to illustrate the procedure.

If you copy/paste C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\playlist into the Windows Run command and hit Enter you'll see a file in the playlist folder which opens called youtube.luac. Provided you have the "Details" view selected for Windows Explorer it'll look like you see it in the image. The file at the bottom of the list which I've arrowed is the one you want to replace with the "youtube.luac" file you created.

Simply drag & drop the youtube.luac into the Playlist folder and confirm that you want to replace the file which is already there. As you can see from the screenshot, the youtube.luac file is dated 04-10-18 while the others are dated 09-08-18.That's because when you overwrite a file, it takes the date it was created which in this particular case is the same date I posted the fix.

If you don't have the "Details" view enabled in Windows you can enable it by right clicking in the right hand pane and select View --->Details. This step isn't actually necessary though.

The above assumes you have the 64-bit version of vlc installed. If you're using the 32-bit version, the steps are the same, but the location will be C:\Program Files(x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\playlist

I don't know but I don't get it. Run command could not find but that's probably because I have VLC on a different drive but I replaced the C: with X: still didn't find so I went the long way around to --->lua to --->playlist--->youtube.luac

Then opened up notepad but could not drag so---> copied ---> pasted to --->youtube.luac

So now when I open "network stream" copy link I don't get an error msg but instead nothing happens. Video doesn't play. What am I missing?

The problem this time around is that the vlc devs haven't updated the youtube.lua file since 9 September as per the screenshot. This file is the one used to create youtube.luac and the same one we're both using now.

All we can do at the moment is to keep an eye on that file on github for when the next update takes place. After that happens, just follow the same procedure to create a new luac file and it'll work again. You can download and create the file from there instead of going to the site I posted before if you wish, but I assume the other link will update automatically with the new data when it becomes available so it doesn't matter which one you use.

you can put these kind of requests on https://trac.videolan.org, but these lua extensions are updated when someone is willing to do the work, so you might not get somewhere with this.

Looks like some kind soul decided to work overtime! The youtube.lua file has now been updated and can be copied from here

If after placing the cursor in the data to be copied, you use CTRL+A to highlight it all, it'll also include the footnote to Github at the bottom of the page which you don't want. You can delete that from the data copied to Notepad before saving it as youtube.luac (same procedure as before).

Alternatively, click the beginning of the data (nothing will appear onscreen) and then scroll down to the bottom of the file. Hold down SHIFT and then click the last word "end". This will highlight everything in between. You can then copy the data with either CTRL+C or by right clicking the highlight and click Copy from the context menu.

I just tried using the new file myself using the link Brightseal provided and here's a screenshot of the video streaming to vlc 3.0.4
