sound muted on playback

I'm editing a video file, so I clicked View-->Advanced controls. The sound plays fine on VLC, but when I save the edited file, it is muted. And everything was working fine just yesterday when I edited another file, and the sound on playback was fine!
The toolbar on Audio says it's muted, but the slider in the bottom right is unmuted. I can't figure out how to set the toolbar to unmuted!
Tools-->Preferences-->Audio -- enable audio is checked, always reset audio start level to 100% is also checked, Output module is automatic, SPDIF doesn't matter whether it's disabled or enabled, still no sound on playback.
It's always something!!! I'm in the middle of an enormous project, and this problem has put me on sudden halt.

Try resetting preferences in the Tools --> Prefs menu.

I did that. The toolbar-->audio still says muted. hitchhiker -- any other suggestions?

Thanks Hitchhiker for the link -- I tried every single step and nothing worked -- still no audio. I decided to use the unedited version on my website, it has audio. I guess I'm going to have to look elsewhere for editing/cropping... I appreciate your help.
