I searched a lot but looks like there is no way of fixing it, is there any plan to fix this issue in future updates?
Thanks

:!: If you want your problem to be solved :
* First read troubleshooting guide VSG:Main
* Always provide verbose LOGS ! (command line or from gui)
* Always check your issue against a developer build from Nightly Build of VLC
* Tell us when your problem is solved !

Same result, washed up colors.

Are you in HDR mode, or SDR tone-mapping?

I played the video myself both in Waterfox and VLC, but don't get the washed out color appearance. If anything, the VLC color reproduction looks better than it does on Waterfox.

Looks to me you are streaming (Youtube and VLC) , download actual file 917MB, and open it with VLC, so it can process HDR data and show it in monitor.

Code: Select all

Yes, I see what you mean.

You could try playing around with the settings as described on this site to see if anything changes. I'd try it myself, but my laptop is an Optimus machine which means it has two graphics solutions. Intel handles all the daily stuff like videos while the Nvidia card which also has 4GB dedicated RAM only kicks in playing games.

I can't even play the video using Intel graphics: it just locks solid. But I can see the color difference from the opening frame and it does indeed look washed out.

Good luck anyway.

Yes, we should do it correctly, but it depends a lot on the setup, hence my question above.

Sometimes HDR is hard to activate, or some drivers are behaving a bit differently. Which is why we need logs.

Yes, we should do it correctly, but it depends a lot on the setup, hence my question above.

Sometimes HDR is hard to activate, or some drivers are behaving a bit differently. Which is why we need logs.

Here's my log file as requested. I see the opening frame, but the video doesn't play anymore after that although the audio is audible.

My laptop dates from 2014 and has an i5-4200 CPU with 8GB RAM. It's also an Optimus system with an Intel HD 4600 handling every day items like video, browsing etc., and an Nvidia GT750M with 4GB dedicated memory for games. I'm not surprised the Intel graphics can't handle 4K video.

Also, I had to delete some of the data from the log due to this message:

  • Your message contains 329807 characters.
The maximum number of allowed characters is 60000
The data which was deleted was just the duplicates such as these lines:

  • avcodec warning: More than 11 late frames, dropping frame
avcodec warning: More than 11 late frames, dropping frame
avcodec warning: More than 11 late frames, dropping frame

Re: HDR washed up colors on non HDR monitor

Postby robUx4 » 15 Oct 2018 08:12

I finally found the problem and the solution. The tone mapping was done but BT.2020 colors (wide gamut) was not converted to BT.709 (smaller gamut). That explains the less saturated colors (smaller values were not expanded).

This is fixed in the 4.0 master and will be available in the nightly builds since 20181014.

Certainly improved but there are some artifacts all over the clip:

Yes they fixed, but as I said there are some artifacts, black and dark blue patches.

the issue is still present on my end, I'm using the latest nightly build (vlc-4.0.0-20190314-1048-dev-win64)

if I play the file using MPV which uses MADVR, the REC 2020 HDR video file gets tone-mapped correctly to SDR REC 709, but VLC doesn't accomplish that conversion and stays unsaturated.. In comparison, MPV does tone-mapping automatically.

If this is not a bug, how do I fix my situation? Shouldn't the detection of a REC 709 Monitor be automatic?
