Issue - adding multiple files to playlist using context menu causes each to open in a new window

Postby ReyKenobi » 18 Aug 2018 15:32

Using Win10 1803 updated to date. Using VLC 3.0.3. However, I have noticed this issue since earlier Windows (8) and VLC versions.

When I choose multiple files and choose "Add to VLC' media player's playlist", each file opens in its own window, so if I choose 10 mp3 files, each will open in a new window and start playing immediately, resulting in a cacophony...not to mentions the amount of resources taken up in one go that sometimes freezes the system.

The only way I have found around it is to add a folder to playlist rather than individual files inside a folder, but then the issue here is if I want to selectively play a few files from the folder. In that case, I have to add one file, then drag and drop the others in that playlist window. So I was wondering if this is a design decision or am I missing out on some setting that would add all the selected files to the same new playlist.

for what its worth, this worked for me.

i had the same issue.

win 10 pro 1803
vlc 3.0.3 (not the one from the microsoft store that has limited features.

latest update to win 10.0.17134.320
updated vlc to 3.04

confirmed vlc is my default app for videos.
issue persists.

frustrated, i picked 1 mp4 right clicked and said open with, it already had vlc at the top implying thats default.

i selected it again, and re-entered the check mark for default.

boom success mp4, mkv, mp3 all playing and queuing for me.

good luck!

Thanks for the reply. That approach of re-registering VLC as default media player did not work for me, unfortunately.

What did work was adding shortcut to VLC in the Windows SendTo folder (which corresponds to the Send To option when you right-click on a file in Windows Explorer. So far, that has been the only way I have been able to selectively queue files in the same VLC playlist from Windows Explorer.

Hope this thread is helpful to someone else with the same issue as us.
