Blu Ray film subtitles stuck on screen

Postby maatt » 12 Jun 2018 17:56

Hi all,

I have used VLC for many years and never had any problems that were not solvable, but in the past few weeks I have come across a very irritating issue regarding subtitles which I never had before.

When playing a commercial blu ray with subtitles after forwarding to the required point (to resume watching where I'd left off) the subtitles will stay stuck on the screen until the next point of spoken dialogue.

In addition the timing of all subtitles appearing is delayed.

This problem does not occur if a film is played from the beginning without pause or if I play a .m2ts stream directly from file explorer in Windows 10, only when starting a film (then forwarding) from the blu ray menu.

I am absolutely sure that this problem has only recently occurred and wonder whether it could be something to do with a new version of VLC (I have version 3.0.3) or a Windows 10 update.

Any help or clues as to what is causing this issue would be greatly appreciated.

The discs are UK region B with audio track set to French and subtitle track set to English, which is the default setting when playing directly from the top menu.

I still don't understand which subtitle "in time" is stuck
I have just uninstalled V 3.0.3 and reinstalled V 2.2.8 and the problem disappears, if I play from a point further forward using the time cursor or next chapter button the subtitles appear and disappear in sync with the video.

It seems obvious to me that this is an issue connected to Blu Ray menus being enabled, with V2.2.8 there is no menu.

I will try installing V3.0.

Ok I've just uninstalled v2.2.8 and installed v3.0.0 and can report that the issue has gone, even though blu ray menus are enabled.

This confirms my claim that the problem is due to a new software version.

I will stick with this version (3.0) until the next release, as this issue has ruined enjoyment of the last two blu rays I've bought as well as cost me £50 trying new blu ray hardware; watching a film in stages is my normal practice so this retrogressive fault is untenable IMO.

You can play bd without menus in 3.0

Tried v3.02 and v3.0.1 - 3.02 has same issue, 3.0.1 works ok so I'm sticking with it.

I can't reproduce with bluray & multiple subs tracks

I can't reproduce with bluray & multiple subs tracks
The 3 discs I've tested that I have the issue with are:

The Burmese Harp (Masters of Cinema, 2012, UK)

The Lovers (from Louis Malle Collection) (Curzon artificial Eye, 2017, UK)

The Wages of Fear (BFI, 2017, UK)

All discs have one subtitle track (English) only, which is accessible from the top menu and right clicking within VLC, but enabled by default by the disc.

To repeat, the subtitle sticking problem only occurs when forwarding the film via time cursor or next chapter button, playing from the BD top menu and when there is a time gap of no dialogue - the subtitle stays on the screen during this gap when it shouldn't be there and only updates when the next piece of dialogue occurs. The subtitle timing is also off (delayed and duration cut short) during continuous sequences of dialogue.

I have not tried a disc having multiple subtitle tracks which have to be selected by default.

Can reproduce both happening on VLC 3.0.3 with Schindlers List BD (17:20, english info subtitle), and out of sync subtitles on another BD. Both have multiple subtitles, and switching doesn't fix the issue. I also have experienced flashing subtitles, where it starts way past where it should but ends about the right time so it "flashes" on screen.

Tested by running uninstaller with "Delete Preferences and Cache", then installing next version, opening disk with no bd menus, selecting correct subtitle, then skipping to timestamp, subtitles should appear in next screen. On Windows 10. Scene works correctly on 3.0.1, stuck and flashing on 3.0.2 and 3.0.3. Also confirmed same 3.0.3 issue on another Windows machine.

Guessing, it looks like the subtitle start time is somehow corrupted forward when seeking (causing out of sync subtitles and flashing) and sometimes start after it's supposed to end (causing stuck subtitles since end time can't cleanup).

Nothing is logged during the subtitle event, but during the seek before I get this

Confirming that this happens for me too, with VLC 3.0.3 and "Cowboy Bebop: The Complete Series".

Pausing and unpausing doesn't disrupt the sync, even if my drive has spun down during the pause and makes the whole video actually stall out after running out the buffer until it's able to resume reading (which is the kind of thing that I would have expected to cause a desync bug, but nope!)

Jumping to individual episodes through the disc's main menu doesn't cause the bug, even though the episodes are concatenated back-to-back on one long timeline (so it effectively "seeks" to the start of the episode I selected).

But if I click VLC's timeline at any point, the subtitles will be thrown out of sync by an unpredictable amount, and will stay on the screen for much much longer than they're meant to. The only fix is to start the entire episode over.

This doesn't happen with MKV files on my hard drive that contain soft subs.

Has anyone made any progress with working around this, other than reverting to older builds? Was a bug ever filed?

I can confirm and reproduce this issue, as described, and am also wondering if a bug has been filed, and when this issue will be fixed.
Does anyone know more about this? I'd imagine it must have been commonly noticed by now.
