Audio showing as 32 bit

Postby EncryptedEggs » 22 Jun 2018 00:38

Hey all,

I was inspecting media information in VLC about a blu ray disc of mine. I noticed that discs that have what I assume is actually 24-bit audio, VLC shows it as 32-bit. See screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/9TQwUXl.jpg.

I googled and apparently this isn't anything new. "Applies to all 24bits audio in VLC since forever" (https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/20120). From somewhere else: "All this is normal: We output either 16bits or 32bits. For 24bits, it is padded to 32bits."

I guess I was wondering two things: (1) Why is this done? (2) would this harm my audio quality in any way, as my DAC is set to 24 bit, 480000.

Sorry if wrong forum.

Computing with 32 bits can result in "less" integer errors. No need to worry about quality degradation!

But we don't care about the output info, especially if it's always 32 bits.
However we do care about the info of the file which should be displayed like it was in v2.x.
To me it's a regression.
