How to remove a problem that would reproduce vp9 normally?
win 8 64bit, i7 3520m 3.4 GHz, gt 645m, 8 gb ram. vlc 3.0.1, nightly not better.
Sorry for english, I'm from russia and i like vlc

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback of the VP9 file, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also please upload a short sample of a problematic VP9 file to either Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

Yes, I can reproduce the issue with VLC 3.0.1.

You should create a new ticket on the VLC Trac with the link to your VP9 file and to this thread.

My tests, since I can't login to the Trac anymore for some reason, on a PC which does not handle hardware acceleration for VP9:

With MPV I got 38-45% CPU usage
With FFplay I got 37-52% CPU usage
With MPC-HC I got 56-65% CPU usage
With VLC 3.0.1 I got 58-71% CPU usage

All of the players are x64 versions.
For instance, and to compare similar CPU usages, you can always feel VLC struggling a bit while it's perfectly smooth with MPC-HC.

If you're using Windows 10 you should not force the vout to Direct3D9 and also enable hardware decoding (Auto or D3D11VA).

The logs lack the beginning of the playback so it's hard to tell what's going on.

Also the iPhone X doesn't record to VP9 as far as I know.
