VLC 3.0.0 destroys cannot play big AVIs

Postby gkln » 14 Feb 2018 15:18

Greetings to all!

I think the following is a bug, but according to the instructions I post it first here.

W764EN, all updates, VLC, "about" saying 3.0.0 - but the last days nearly every day came an update, today also, and the install procedure said somthing like 3.0.3 or so. But this is a minor problem.

VLC-settings reset.

Cutting Videos with Adobe Premiere CS 3 results in great raw AVI-files, in my case about 15 GB for 1 hour movie.
Since VLC 3.0.0 (and never observed with 2.6) those files cannot be played anymore. They start regularly, but in the range of about minute 13 to 20, depending on the movie, all of a sudden the picture is completele "destroyed", looking like filled with some hundreds square or rectangular, coloured pixels, quickly changing the pattern, also the sound disappears and changes to "noise".
No difference, if the file is played from the beginning until this critical point or if I jump beyond by clicking the respective point on the progress bar.
No difference, if the file is on an external usb or a local harddrive.
Alle the files play well with WMP.

Hi, +1

Since I have installed VLC 3.0.1 Vetinari, the player shows bigs colored pixels after 19'59sec on my .avi file..
I don't have trouble with other players available in windows 10 (MPC-HC x64 for exemple).

ALL DETAILS on the case :

Many thanks to anyone having an insight about that.

Can you provide a small sample file ? Or it's only after a certain time playing ?

Can you provide some detailed logs ? (Tools > Messages > Verbosity 2)

I did it now also on a W1064 PC (Dell Laptop) with VLC 2.2.4 - all worked fine on a 19 GB AVI-file.
Then upgradet to VLC 3.0.2 with vlc-3.0.2-20180321-0554-win64.exe
VLC displays only changing patterns of large pixel-like as posted in my first contribution on top.
Phenomenon starts at 18:58 of an overall 1:27:48 movie.

The movie was already playing when I set the verbose-mode 2. To save time, I jumped in about 3 jumps near to the 18:58 mark where the "pixels" appear. A couple of seconds after the "crash" I stopped and extracted the log.

Here is the msg-output:

I can confirm this behaviour. AVI files like these, usually imported from DV Camcorder, are huge. Everything above a filesize of 4GB does not play correctly anymore once this barrier is passed, while VLC 2.x played them fine. The 4GB are equivalent to about 18 to 20 min of DV encoded video.

Maybe this helps.

In any way, on my machines with VLC 3.04 and 3.06 this problem doesn't show up any more.
On my behalf can be considered as settled.
