Movies show a grey colorskin instead some brilliant colors

Postby AndreiP » 24 Nov 2017 23:22

I have an issue with some movies which I tried to watch with VLC (2.2.6) on Windows 7 64bit (Fully patched, Drivers are up to date from the Vendor Website). The issue is that those movies have a grey skin. However when I watch the same video on the same TFT screen with MPV (https://mpv.io/installation/) then the colors are ok. That looks like a bug to me, however this might also some kind of VLC limitation here. The issue is not caused by the Video Effects filter, as I didn´t touched that one. I also tried to re-install VLC and deleted everything. I also re-installed the whole PC (mostly because of the move from a HDD to SDD) which also didn´t solved the issue.

Video Codec Infos shown by VLC:
Codec: MPEG-H Part2/HEVC (H.265) (hevc)
Resolution: 1920x1088
Display Resolution: 1920x1080
Frame rate: 23.976216
Decoded format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV

You can also try to enable or disable some video options such as Overlay and/or Hardware YUV -> RGB conversions.

Thanks, I should have mentioned that URL in my post above, because this didn´t solve the issue for me on 4 different Notebooks I tried so far. Additionally MPV plays the colors correctly on each of them regardless which setting I use, only VLC do not do that. So any changes in the NVideo Pannel should also affect MPV, but as said that player is using the correct colors regardless which setting I use...

Could I provide a sample here and you can try that on your PC (if yes what would be the best place to share a 60MB sample)? It would be great if somebody else could have a check as I´m very sure its not possible to solve that with any settings locally.

Please upload a short sample of a problematic file to either Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

Took me some time to split the movies which have those issues. I have now created a small sample from 3 of the affected movies and uploaded the sample here (all 3 URLs host the same ZIP file with parts from 3 different affected movies):

https://streams.videolan.org/issues/195 ... or_Bug.zip
http://www62.zippyshare.com/v/5E8vl0yJ/file.html
http://www.embedupload.com/?d=2GCVMGSSN5
https://www.mirrorcreator.com/files/GRA ... .zip_links

P.S.
I also managed to create TRAC ticket 19528

I can also reproduce the issue on a MAC mini (with macOS High Sierra and VLC 2.2.8 ). The colors are grey here as well. The affected Windows system is by the way not using an nVidia GPU, so the workaround here do not apply. The primary system is an HP notebook with up to date drivers and an i7-4600U CPU (= Intel HD GPU).

It's HDR samples. It's not going to work in VLC 2.2 but should work in 3.0.

We do detect it and read the metadata but don't handle it correctly.

hm thanks for the input. But VLC 3.0.0-rc7 (nightly) shows the same issue (I already tested that on Windows as reported above; see screenshot below). I get the same visual output with VLC 3.0.0-rc7 as with latest stable and not what I see for example in latest MPV (https://mpv.io/installation/). So I assume the issue reported by me is still existing in VLC 3.0.

The fix is in Windows nightly builds starting from the 25th (today). And that's only Windows 7 (force direct3d11) and upper (default for 8.1 and 10).

If you're running anything other than that, there's no fix.

I´m running Windows 7 currently but can reproduce the issue as well on the MAC. For Windows I can test that again with a more recent version. Which one should I test?

Sorry it was in the 4.0 branch on the 25th. And the 3.0 RC branch on the 26th.
There's no fix for mac/Linux yet.

ok, tested the lasted RC8 nighlty now as well, however the issue still exists and isn´t fixed (see attached screenshot for RC8). I still can reproduce the issue on various windows PCs with RC8 and combination with screens (I also I performed a full setting reset just to be sure).
