Converting an .FLV file to an .MP4 file causes increased file storage, why?

Postby BananasNCream » 18 Dec 2017 05:05

I have some old .FLV files on my hard drive and I simply wanted to convert them to the .MP4 file format because it's supposedly more modern and compatible with everything. I performed 1 conversion without any issues using VLC. But the file becomes larger. Why?

Because it has a higher bitrate than the original.

Okay, I checked your assertion with MediaInfo and that seems to be correct. The .MP4 file has a higher bit-rate. But since there's no gain in quality I don't want to do that. Is it possible to keep the bit-rate the same during the conversion of the video files going from .FLV to .MP4?

Yes, you can read a number of online guides, eg. https://www.guidingtech.com/8848/use-vl ... o-another/

Also, you can try to convert the FLV video file without recoding the audio and video tracks when you select the "keep original video track" option in the video codec and audio codec tabs. This results in a fast conversion maintening the original tracks in the new MP4 video file.

Yes, don't convert, just copy the streams into an MP4 container ;-)

Thanks for both of your answers. This is good news.
