No Audio

Postby Dr_Alphabet » 30 Aug 2017 01:28

I've been experiencing this issue lately and it's starting to drive me nuts. Sometimes, randomly, VLC will not play audio. Any audio, no matter the format. I created an account here just so I could figure out what the hell is going on.

I've already gone through the basic troubleshooting steps that most people recommend when you google "VLC no audio," but my problem is when I try and change the output module to waveout, the only device option I have listed is Microsoft Soundmapper. I can't select my speakers or headphones. I've confirmed that it's not a device issue, re-installed VLC, reset back to defaults, so i'm not sure what exactly is going on.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Windows 7 x64
VLC 2.2.6.0

Edit: Now it's working. I made no changes since this post.... :?
Still need to figure out root cause

Edit2: So I checked audio devices while the audio IS working, and I found that while working, I am able to change output device selection. Not sure why sometimes it doesn't recognize any output devices. Could that be a windows issue instead of VLC? The only problem with that assumption is that audio works fine for other media players when VLC is crapping out on me so.... yea idk.

go to C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Roaming\vlc and delete all files.
the default settings are the best!
don't change the settings.

I did that when I reinstalled VLC the first time. The issue still came back. It seems like it's an issue with VLC not recognizing my output devices for whatever reason.

try to update your audio card with latest audio drivers (if you have more than 1 driver installed on your machine, uninstall all old drivers.

That's one obvious thing I haven't tried yet. Like I said in my first post, it's working now so no way to confirm if that resolves it at the moment but is certainly a good first step

Since you do not provide any logs,
there's little chance understanding what goes wrong.
:!: If you want your problem to be solved :
* First read troubleshooting guide VSG:Main
* Always provide verbose LOGS ! (command line or from gui)
* Always check your issue against a developer build from Nightly Build of VLC
* Tell us when your problem is solved !

Does it work if you rename VLC.exe to VLC2.exe ?
If so, then VLC.exe might be blocked in the Windows sound mixer.

I was trying to capture a log while it wasn't working but of course it's working again for the time being... I'll update with log text when it decides to not work.

edit: Was able to capture a log of an audio track not playing correctly. You want me to copy and paste it here or upload it somewhere first?

Just curious if anyone had a solution to this. It's still happening randomly....
