hi guys,
This is crazy. I changed vlc.exe to vlc2.exe but still no sound on the video. And my WMP says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly". But at that time I'm still listening to music from a website. I'm using win Xp. Can anybody tell me what's wrong with my pc?

My VLC player's sound cut out in the middle of a Gilmore Girls episode. alphie's solution looks Vista-specific; I certainly can't figure out how to apply it to an XP machine.

Granted it would probably help if I knew what a registry key is and how to get at it.

Somebody willing to walk me through fixing my video player?

EllieMurasaki: With Windows XP this registry problem cannot happen. Removing %appdata%\vlc folder should fix your issue if it is related to VLC settings.

By 'this problem' do you mean whatever the registry key thing is meant to fix or do you mean VLC player having no sound? Because I'm dead certain VLC player is not playing sound.

Okay, deleting that folder fixed it, thanks very much.

Now I´m coming in to top it. I´v read this thread a few times now. Deleted the AppData folder, did nothing, renamed to vlc2.exe a few times, didn´t even show on programs so suddenly I had no vlc on my computer..., tried to look for the folder alphie was talking about, can´t find it. Also uninstalled vlc ones and downloaded the latest version 1.1.5, had 0.9.9 before, did not help either.

So here I stand totally lost on what to do next, I would like to try alphies suggestion but I don´t seem to have that or those folders, so not to optimistic about that.

Any ideas on what to try next? I can mention that I seem to have some sound problems with Mediamonkey to, playing music in it gives cracks and pops that i´m sure never been there before so I´m in the thoughts that it may be something further within my system also since nothing I do with vlc seems to help.

Runs Vista.

What do you think?

So you checked them via registry editor like regedit?

I´m afraid i don´t quite follow.

But i did look manually for it/them in all places I could think of that they could be in, and then I went on to search with the regular search. Found nothing, now I´m not an expert on computers, far from it I merely now how to use them effectively so it is possible I looked in the wrong places.

Nevertheless that said it was a little bit unnecessary to do so because it got solved 8) , but a question should not go unanswered. :)

And I have to smack myself with a hand on my forehead because it was a little to easy in the end, I simply restarted my computer and voilá. I guess it was some update that needed a restart that muddled with my sound and gave the cracks in my tracks to, cause that also disappeared.

So sadly I´m not sure what fixed it, but I´m all to happy with the fact that it is to even ponder. And now I again can enjoy the full and complete gratification VLC has given me for so many years.

But thanks a bunch for taking interest in my problem though it was a fairly horrible situation to be in and it is well appreciated when people are willing to give a helping hand to a person in such. :D

I have windows 7 64bits. I´ve tried all of the above but the sound on my vlc still doesn't work.
It was working fine until I installed the new version.
Any answers...please

Crackles, pops, hizzes and other audio anomalies
If you hear some unwanted audio problems you can try another audio output module to see if that solves the issue (Save and restart VLC after changes). Open Tools -> Preferences (set Show Settings to All) and then choosing Audio -> Output module. There are multiple output modules you can use for audio. DirectX, Win32 waveOut and Simple DirectMedia Layer should work in most cases. Unfortunately there isn't an ASIO support in VLC. Image about audio output modules setting...

With the solution alphie came up, I found it easier just to reset the mixer values through the control panel. The renaming of the file didn't work for my situation on Win 7 and sifting thru the registry looking for that damn value is too confusing for some and time consuming.

So restart the Windows Audio Service

Control Panel -->Admin Tools--->Service-->Windows Audio then click restart. You must restart all programs using sound to ensure this fully takes effect.

This thread has been very helpful in working out why I'm getting no sound from VLC all of a sudden. The final step of working out how to reset Vista Mixer's settings was more difficult that I expected as Google didn't prove much help. So, for the benefit of other users with the same problem or even VLC developers (is this only happening since v1.0.0?) here's the registry key I had to delete to bring VLC back to life...

Code: Select all

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\LowRegistry\Audio\PolicyConfig\PropertyStore\2c8ae02d_0] @="{0.0.0.00000000}.{c3f740ae-a380-4215-8b3f-2ef4bdd62cb0}|\\Device\\HarddiskVolume1\\Program Files\\VideoLAN\\VLC\\vlc.exe%b{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\LowRegistry\Audio\PolicyConfig\PropertyStore\2c8ae02d_0\{219ED5A0-9CBF-4F3A-B927-37C9E5C5F14F}] "3"=hex:04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,80,3f,00,00,00,00 "4"=hex:04,20,00,00,00,00,00,00,10,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00 "5"=hex:0b,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
I'm guessing some of that will be different on another system, so I'd just go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\LowRegistry\Audio\PolicyConfig\PropertyStore and search for vlc.exe.
I can confirm this fixed it for me, just do like he said above and search for vlc.exe and remove that key, works perfect. This was driving me NUTS for the longest time! I even stopped using VLC on my old laptop because it happened on there as well, thank god i finally found a solution!

I am currently having this problem.

Win7 Pro x64
VLC 1.1.11 (tried older versions)

This no audio issue came out of no where. I found this thread and renamed VLC.exe to VLC2.exe which resolved the audio problem. It also broke all the file icons. I don't find that to be a fix but rather a band-aid. I then tried the reg edit (deleting the keys) and that did nothing. I have reinstalled, deleted all my cache and prefs multiple times to no avail.

Also, I use s/pdif so currently ONLY digital audio is playing. Everything else is not.

Do we have a known solution I can use?

The reg fix should always work if the vlc.exe -> vlc2.exe rename works.

Since this is an ongoing thread and I just found it on Google when having sound issues I'll post a remedy I found. Sorry if someone already mentioned it.

VLC is on my laptop which is a Gateway using W7 Pro. Trying to watch an MKV file and no sound, tested it on GoogleTV on my HDTV and perfect audio.
I was searching for VLC to change the name to VLC2 like recommended.. then I saw an option come up with "reset VLC settings and preference cache" or something along those lines so I went ahead and did that first and it fixed my no sound issue with VLC.

Try that out before renaming the program name if VLC has no sound.. might work.

Cheers.

Thanks a lot, alphie. Worked on Win7 too. Since this was the first time i was editing registry values, it took me a while to do 'right click > find' inside HKEY_CU....\PropertyStore. Might want to add the right click and 'find' for first-timers like me.

Sorry to bump this old Thread, but it seems to be one of the more active ones on the topic with helpful soggestions. It's also one of the top google suggestions which means more people will be coming back here than other threads.

I'm experiencing the same problem. Audio outputs don't help, deleting appdata didn't help. Renaming to vlc2.exe DID work, but deleting the registry values reccomended by alphie didn't. I also noticed that when I directly open vlc.exe and open a file it works flawlessly. But when double clicking a file that will then open vlc to play it, there is no sound. Any ideas?

@ILC77: You must rename the executable file vlc.exe as vlc2.exe, not the manifest file vlc.exe.manifest. If Windows Explorer hides the .exe extension by default, you can identify the proper file by its cone icone and the value in the Type column.

Try also double-clicking on the executable and opening the audio or video file to play from the running instance of VLC rather than double-clicking on the audio or video file to see if it changes anything. If you change the "output module" to WaveOut or anything else in the audio preferences, don't forget to save your change AND close/restart VLC for the change to apply. I tried it without restarting VLC, thinking the change would apply instantly, so that brick is probably too intelligent to marry me too...

If you want to receive relevant help, always mention useful information such as your version of Windows, VLC, age, sexual orientation, etc. ;)

Better just unmute VLC in the Windows mixer (i.e. SNDVOL.EXE).

Alphie, you beautiful shining jewel, can you please re-explain that to someone who thinks tinkering with registry keys is a short cut to eternal hellfire?

How do I "delete a registry key"? It's not something they taught me in Boy Scouts, though it should have been.
