Problem in copying from disc

I have recently downloaded the 2.4.4. version, but am having a problem copying video clips from a homemade dvd. When I try to view the clips back, which are less than 30 seconds long, the majority of frames are skipped past, so that a 30 second clip take less than 3 seconds to play. I tried clips that I had copied before and the same thing happens. I should make clear that I did have Videolan downloaded some years before, so I'm not unfamiliar with it. The reason I'm in this situation now is because of a recent virus problem which was only solved by having my hard drive replaced - thankfully, everything is now working fine.

Do I need to download something else to compliment Videolan? Please, can someone help.

Have you really downloaded version 2.4.4 - or it is 2.2.4?

What exactly do you do? Copy using the VLC? I copy with the Windows Explorer.
Or do they convert your self created video clips? If yes how?

It's probably the 2.2.4 version. sorry for confusion.

What I have done before is insert a disc into the laptop (Inspiron 15R). The version of Videolan I had before, as far back as 2010, would automatically activate and I would play the disc on the videolan screen. When I wanted to record a clip I'd just hit the record button to start recording, and hit it again to stop. The clip would be saved on the video section of internet explorer and I would then convert it via the any video converter installation. That's how it used to work.

After having had to have the hard drive replaced on the laptop last month, I downloaded and installed the 2.2.4 version with the aim of picking up where I'd left off, but it hasn't worked out that way. If there is another way to record clips from disc, I don't know about it. I've never heard of Windows Explorer being used in that way.

You mean sure the Windows Explorer, do not you?

What don't work? Can you not find the clip any more?

If so, then in the simple Preferences for "Input & Codecs Settings" for the option "Record directory or filname" set the folder where the clips should be saved.

By the way, the VLC can do a lot of things, he can media objects playing, recording, streaming, converting or saving. But he is not a copier.

I can still find the clips in Windows Explorer (thanks again for correcting me), but when I try to play them - even after converting them to avi on the Any Video Converter - the clips will not play as they should.

Imagine a 30 second clip. Both video and audio play for a second, then the video skips through fast, mostly in black, and gets to the end of the clip in about 3 seconds. Not ideal. I've tried this on clips I've recorded before the hard drive was replaced, and the same thing happens.

I don't know if there's a fault in VLC, or if there's something else I need to download and install to compliment it. Any ideas?

Is there a player with which you can play these clips?
Are you sure that the clips are not damaged?

Obtain the free "MediaInfo" tool and poste here what MediaInfo shows to your videos in the text view.

Ok, got Mediainfo. Opened one of the clips that didn't play right and this is what the text reads. Hope it all makes sense to you.

What you have posted is the simple view of MediaInfo. I had asked for the text view. Important is the information for the video.
As far as show the video information, the video should be fine.

Can you play these clips directly from the DVD?

Okay, here's the text view. Yes, I can play the clips from the DVD they've come from - maybe one other thing to mention, when I was recording the clips ok, is that because the DVD had been created from clips recorded from the tv, when playing the disc on vlc, sometimes the clips would freeze slightly on a particular frame and stop recording. So having successfully recorded the first part up to that point, I would then go back and record from just after the freezing point. That's what I was in the process of doing when the hard drive packed up. Anyway, here's the text view.

MediaInfo does not show any anomalies.

If you can play the clips correctly from the DVD, then you should rip these clips once again from the DVD to the PC.

I recommend the free tool Handbrake.

Thanks for putting me onto Handbrake. It works really well, though I do have the odd problem. When I select a few clips and put them in the queue, only the first one in the queue is being saved correctly, in that the whole picture is complete. With the rest, it's like the picture has zoomed in. They are all being saved automatically to documents, and I am naming each one individually after the backslash after documents. You sound like you know more about Handbrake than I so far - do I need to include a .mp4 with each clip, or does that not matter?

It's ok, I've worked it out. I found I had to clear the destination file bar each time before naming a destination point. Even though it was showing the right track, the automatically generated title ended in m4v, which seems to have caused the problem.
