"VTS_01_1.VOB" files won't open in VLC

Postby Spaghetti » 17 Jan 2017 20:10

Hi,

I burned many years of home videos from VHS tapes to DVD-R disks and also copied the files to external hard drives. I used Windows 7 to burn the files a few years ago.

The problem is that the first numbered file (VTS_01_1.VOB) in the VIDEO_TS folder will not open correctly or play in VLC Media Player on Windows 10 Home 64 bit. When I double click the VOB file, VLC opens but the progress bar and buttons just flash crazily. The problem occurs while trying to play the file from the DVD-R and also the external drive. It is only the first numbered VOB file that won't play: VTS_01_1.VOB. All the rest play just fine.

Each DVD-R has files such as these:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO = opens fine in VLC (this apparently is the entire video)
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB = will not open in VLC (also the entire video)
VTS_01_2.VOB = opens fine in VLC
VTS_01_3.VOB = opens fine in VLC
VTS_01_4.VOB = opens fine in VLC
VTS_01_5.VOB = opens fine in VLC

The VOB file will not play in Windows Movie Maker nor Windows Media Player. However, the VOB fill will play fine in MPC-HC.

I copied and pasted the VTS_01_1.VOB file to my desktop and changed the extension to .mpg. The MPG also would not play in VLC or Movie Maker.
However, the MPG plays fine in Windows Media Player, in Picasa3, and MPC-HC.

I also have K-Lite Codec Pack 12.8.0 Full installed.

I didn't realize until just now that VIDEO_TS.IFO is the full video and it plays fine in VLC. Also, I had assumed (incorrectly, I guess) that VTS_01_1.VOB was the first part of 5 parts, when in fact, it appears that VTS_01_1.VOB is the entire video - and that my movie is actually in 4 parts. Correct me if I'm wrong.

So, my question for the experts here, is it normal that the VTS_01_1.VOB and VTS_01_1.MPG won't play in VLC?

Thanks

Good luck getting an answer - I posted about something similar and also I've seen several similar posts with no responses - I have two computers - A desktop with windows 8.1 and a laptop with windows 10 home 64-bit - The windows 10 home 64-bit laptop with the latest version of VLC does the same thing. I put a commercial dvd in and it won't play. When I go to D drive and click play with VLC - it just flashes a grey screen - When I go to vlc and click open disk and open the desk from that location - same thing.
I can take that same disk to my desktop with the latest version of VLC, and the DVD menu instantly comes up - no problem and plays perfectly fine.

I am dealing with the same general situation but I must be a dummy cause I can not find a way to post NEW TOPIC so I'm glad this is here!
Next question is do they ever read these..

I have Windows 10, a Sony DVD/Blue Ray player. I am trying to copy and burn a DVD of some movie clips. Everything copies and burns with no problem, but when I try to play the disk it says;
"Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///F:/'. Check the log for details."

First thing is I don't know where the Log is.. But I have tried to play the disc in a different player and it won't play.
However, when I go to "Open File" and click on VideoTS.IFO, the menu comes up and it plays fine.. Any help? Thanks
