Record part of a video?

I have an MOV file open in VLC 2.2.4. I click the Record button, then the Play button and then hit Space to stop it, as the rest of the original is unwanted. But my recordings folder remains empty. I'm clearly doing something wrong or omitting some other step or setting. Any help would be appreciated please.

When you click on the recording button, is the point in the recording button red?

I thought so but maybe I was being clumsy, because I now appear to have got the hang of it thanks.
