VLC stopped working for all MP4 and 3GP files

Postby has4 » 11 Nov 2016 10:46

Hi all,
I used to be able to play all 3GP and MP4 files recorded on various Android phones on VLC. This has suddenly stopped working, and VLC crashes before opening the main window. I noted that even on playing MP4 and 3GP files in Windows Media Player, it shows the initial frame and plays the sound, but the video is not running.
I figured my Codecs may have been corrupted and I installed a K-Lite Codec Pack. Afterwards, MP4 and 3GP play would play OK in WMP, but would still crash in VLC.

In Safe Mode, the crash does not happen and VLC is able to play both MP4 and 3GP (of course with unusable 8 bit colour).

This change seems to have happened after a Windows update, but I'm not sure.
What is the best way forward?

Many thanks

Are you on V 2.2.4 ? If so, just revert to V 2.2.3.
It's what I did and I don't have this issue anymore..

I had already tried those without any success.
I read somewhere that version 2.2.4 had a bug and I then switched to V 2.3.3.
No more problems now...
