How do I sync the audio and video while recording?

I've got a situation, where the audio lags behind the video. I'm not sending over a stream. I'm recording to a file directly. I've gone through ALL the settings for things like "caching" and "delay" in the advanced settings, and set them ALL to 0. I have systematically gone through the advanced settings of VLC player, and changed the value for any setting that contains the word "delay" or "cache" or "caching" to 0. This means that the audio and video inputs should start at EXACTLY the same time, and therefore get recorded to the file at exactly the same time. But they aren't. The audio for a given sound producing event can be heard a bit after you see the sound producing event. I'm using a single clap of my hands as the test event. It seems to be delayed by about a half of a second. What is going on in VLC's internals that causes such a delay of the audio stream? And why is this delay not a setting that can be altered in the settings menu?
