Screen resoultion makes controls and menu too small

Postby usnrma » 27 Jun 2016 01:43

I have a Lenovo Yoga 900 with a screen resolution of 3200 x 1800. The menu and controls are so small as to be unreadable and unusable. Every other program I have scales correctly for my device. Can someone please help as it is nearly impossible to use VLC to view videos because of the very tiny controls.

There is no solution for this. However you can change Menu fonts as follows;

1) From windows control panel, search "Display".
2) Click "Display".
3) From "Change only the text size", change "Title bars" and "Menus".

Every other program scales correctly. This solution would cause everything else to be off.

Hi,
I'm wondering whether there has been any progress on fixing this issue (or, perhaps, if someone has discovered a work-around). I am having no luck via the web.

It should work with VLC 3.0.0.
You can try a nightly build.

Was this ever solved? I like to think I'm pretty tech savvy but can't for the life of me seem to sort this.

Thanks!

What a joke - I don't understand why this isn't a simple fix. I did just download a nightly build and it's been fixed; so not sure why they haven't updated on the official release...

Where did you get a nightly build? I am showing on the current version but the controls are still so small as they ae nearly impossible to use. I cant even post a screenshot to show what I am talking about. This is frustrating as I posted this as in issue in June of 2016 and it is now the end of March 2017 and the problem still exists.

any time you want you can pick up a nightly, and of course sometimes they are broken(useless) for a day or maybe two at a time.

The project works strictly on volunteerism. There's probably a billion lines of information that has to go together for each official release.

This should be treated as a bug, not an enhancement. It should also be fixed in a general way, it should choose a method based on screen resolution. I am a retiree who has partially paralyzed hands, doing anything with the mouse is problematic for me. Positioning the pointer precisely is a chore. Higher resolution monitors are a fact of life. Mine is only a 2K monitor and there are already 4 and 6K devices available. The controls on them would be so small that I wouldn't be able to use one of them.

The advice to enlarge the font does no good - I have already increased it to 250% and the controls are barely usable. If I make it any larger, it creates problems for some web sites.

I had exactly this issue when connected to my LG TV, and solved it whilst trying to fix another issue where the edges of the screen were cut off on all sides. The solution was in the TV not the PC. I set my TV to "Just Scan" in the "Aspect Ratio" setting & it immediately fixed it - no need to reboot or restart the app. Other TV's will no doubt have a different name for that setting.

Not being a linux expert I am at a loss as to what is going on here but could be related to how HDMI is a "2 way" connection which talks to the graphics card. Or just the usual Ubuntu Witchcraft ? I did also sacrifice a goat at full moon so that may have been the real answer.

My setup is Ubuntu 14.04 with Nvidia GTX440 (?) connected via HDMI to LG Smart TV vintage 2016.

ymmv.

It's 2019 and I'm still having the same problem with VLC 3.0.6. I'm mostly after changing the font size in the playlist. The weird thing is that I think it worked before. I just right clicked and increased the view size. The problem is that now it can only be increased one time (which isn't enough) , then nothing happens.

Just bumping this thread.
The playlist font is too small on Windows 10 with the latest VLC.
Changing the system font does not affect the playlist.
Right clicking the playlist and selecting Display List > Increase size does increase the font size, but only by a very small amount, and this does not persist when VLC is closed and reopened.
The media library is very good in all other aspects.
It renders the Media Library unusable.

"I think I may have fixed it!!!
At least it worked for me and now I have menu with big font and can use it normally.
1. Go to your program files and find VLC folder.
2. Right click on VLC.exe and select properties.
3. Select on the top "Compability".
4. Execute the problem solver of compability (my windows is not in english)
5. Done! Open VLC and you will have big font."

Specifically the "Change high DPI settings" under the compatibility tab. For me, checking the box under "program DPI" worked the best, although "override high DPI scaling" also worked, but was more blurry.

Thank you for the tip. Yes it should make the application DPI unaware and replace it by compositor scale. The main reason is that Qt doesn't support fractional scaling yet with QtWidgets unfortunately.

Yes, we're working on it.
NOT GOOD ENOUGH!! It's December 2022 and I can barely use a service I've been using for over a decade because YOU haven't figured out how to make the text big enough to read! Pathetic, there are a lot of other services out there, why stay with VLC when you can't get your sh*t straight? HOW HARD IS IT TO INCREASE A FONT SIZE???

My problem is somewhat related, but maybe not identical. I have a laptop and a desktop connected to the same monitor via a KVM switch. The large monitor has a lower scaling number in Windows than the laptop screen, for obvious reasons. When I switch to the desktop with VLC open, the laptop defaults to its own screen, and thus to the higher scaling. This causes everything in VLC to become tiny (for some reason). But when I switch the laptop back to the large monitor, it doesn't undo this change - everything remains tiny.

I discovered that it was due to having created the environment variable QT_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTORS - I suspect in an attempt to enlarge the text on the laptop screen. Removing it or leaving it blank solves the problem.

I cannot believe this issue still exists lol. It doesn't scale to 150%, it thinks it's still 100%. But it goes insanely large when you go to 175%
