VLC has been my favorite media player for a long time. For the last couple of years I have struggled to make it work. I have tried googling to get help but it still does not work. Frankly, I dont remember ever finding anything to help me. So, I come here. I should have started here!
I use it mostly to play voicemail, mp3's.
Error as follows:
Titled: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLan\VLC\vlc.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I would love to have VLC functioning.
This was happening on Windows 7, 8. and now on windows 10.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:

50 MB max should be enough.

I'm having this same problem, it appears to be with a specific disk - HBO's "Rome - the complete first season" disk 3. Disk 1, 2, 4 play correctly. Running version 2.2.1 on Windows 7. The disc does play correctly in Windows Media Player (but that doesn't work on my attached HDscreen ... hense my use of VLC). Here's the log.

I'm running Win10. I'm using VLC Media Player 2.2.1.

I've been having the same problem, namely: If I right-clicked a folder or file (MP3 or WMA) and selected to play from VLC, I would get the same runtime error as above.

I reset all the preferences for VLC on my computer and, now, it seems to work fine.

I went: START (Yes, I know, technically it's not anymore) > ALL APPS > VIDEOLAN > VLC MEDIA PLAYER - RESET PREFERENCES AND CACHE FILES.

It works fine now.

I'm having the EXACT same problem as ZeeMartin (above) on EXACTLY the same disc: Rome, Season 1, disc III.

Resetting all of the preferences and cache files DID *NOT* WORK.

I forgot to say that Rome, Season 1, disc III *doesn't work* on VLC 2.2.1 under Ubuntu 15.10 either.

So the problem seems not to be Win7 specific.

This disk *does* work on a dedicated (non-computer) DVD player, tho.

I could *not* get Rome Season 1 disk III to work with Windows Media Player on Win7; WMP complained of DRM incompatibility issues with DVD HW, graphics HW & this particular disc.
However, I don't know how relevant WMP problems are to VLC, since I don't use WMP very often, and I don't know if WMP would give the same complaints on other discs that VLC plays just fine.

I could *not* get Rome Season 1 disk III to play under Ubuntu with "Videos", either. It complained about not having the right codec. However, once again, I don't use Videos very often, so I don't know if Videos also has trouble with other disks that VLC can play.

Also checking in to say: Exact problem, exact same disc. I thought I was losing my mind trying to fix the problem, but I guess I'll just go stream these eps? Argh.
