audio stuttering and distortions

Hello, over the last few days whenever I am opening links on my web browers my VLC audio distorts. This is the case if it is a song or a video file. I've looked throughout the forum and the only thing I can see is going to tool>preferences and then changing some of the settings, I've tried this and saved and restarted but to no avail. This is extremely frustrating! Any help would be appreciated

what web browser are you using? do you know the format of the files have?
