When playing those MTS files, I cannot hear any sound. My computer is equiped with only a set of stereo speakers.
I have a second camera (Sony pocket camera capable of recording video). It too saves as MTS file, but stereo sound. Those MTS files plays correctly in VLC.
I've also tried to download the portable version of VLC from portableapps. VLC portable also plays the Panasonic MTS files with surround with no sound, still a problem.
I've tried different combinations of Audio output device, but nothing seems to help.

[Edit]
I've tried to connect a Logitech G35 5.1 headset to my computer and made VLC use that as sound device. The MTS surround files plays just fine as long as I use the G35 headset.
Isn't VLC capable to downmix from surround to stereo during playback?
