DVD menu doesnt show when VLC launches

Windows 8.1 64bit, VLC 2.2.1

When I insert a DVD into my Windows8.1 64-bit system, VLC launches.
Instead of displaying the DVD's main menu, VLC displays a blank green screen with a couple of rectangles where the menu "Play from Beginning" and "Scene Selection" options should appear. If I click one of those rectangles, it does jump to the relevant menu, and THEN if I click the VLC "Menu" icon, the actual main menu for the DVD appears.
On my old (windows 7, 32bit) system, the DVD main menu was always displayed correctly as soon as I inserted a DVD and VLC launched.

How can I get that to happen on my new system?
That is, how can I get VLC to display the DVD's main menu when it comes up, instead of a blank green screen??

Have you checked your preferences in vlc? Perhaps restore default settings, or check your OSD settings. Another possibility is the DVD is damaged, and the data cannot be accessed by the player. In that case, you should copy the DVD video to the hard drive and then play the copied file in VLC.

Very puzzling.
I've checked all those things, including resetting the preferences.
It doesn't matter what DVD I insert... happens every time!
Blank green screen with yellow rectangles where the main menu-selections should be; click one of the rectangles and the DVD plays; click the VLC "menu" button and the DVD's main menu appears the way it's supposed to.

Any DVD at all. Tried a bunch of different ones.
Today I notice on this forum that I'm not the only one to report this problem. Apparently it's a bug with the latest release of VLC

Current version of 2.2.1 doesn't render dvd menu's properly.

Update to a nightly or wait until the next major release. I can confirm that the nightly fixed the issues on my end.

Found a temporary workaround:
(On a Windows 8.1 system) I uninstalled VLC 2.2.1 and installed the older version 1.1.10.
That fixes the no-menu problem.
